Well I don't get it. I keep everything in my vinotemp and it has been holding a rock steady 67% and around 65 to 70 degrees. But to day I open it up and find about 15 to 29 of my cigars are covered with mold. It only seems to have effected a half a drawer that I had dedicated to cigars without the cello on them. so far everything else looks ok do I need to pull everything and clean out the whole vino or will just pulling the effected sticks be enough? Right now I have pulled the ones with mold and put them in a storage bag. Man I hate that lost maybe a third of my collection.:crying:

If your Vino is on the cold side and your room is on the warmer and humid side and you open the Vino often... I know that's a lot of if's

Condensation can hit the surface of your cigars. Are you using beads? Some electronic humidifiers like Oasis may overhimidify if the door is left open too long and the temp rises then when the temp drops the air can't hang onto the moisture (it's relative humidity remember) so it goes into the cigars. Do you have good air flow or is it packed to the gills? All could play a part.

Can you post a picture of the "infected" cigars?

Not trying to be a wise ass, but are you sure it's "mold?"

yeah its mold grey powdery all over them including the foot. I am wondering if in trading I may have introduced one or two that may have already had some mold. yes I use beads in the vino. And I try not to open it to often. I don't see anything on the cedar drawer but still worried about spores, paranoid now I guess. Anyway thanks everyone.

Sorry to thread jack but since we are on the subject. I notice that people tend to say that a cigar is toast if the mold is growing at the foot. Would it not be acceptable to use our high quality cigar cutters and snip off about a 1/2" to see if the mold has gotten in there? I think I'd rather waste a 1/2" than a whole cigar? (please don't flame me I am a newbie)

If there is mold at the foot of the cigar, don’t bother saving it. The mold has spread in between the layers of tobacco leaf so it is very hard to remove it completely. Moldy cigars are not to be smoked.

Again, you can save moldy cigars but to a certain extent. If you catch the mold growth early, then it’s always possible to save them and still be able to smoke them. If you catch the mold outbreak too late and it has spread to the foots of your cigars or even the humidification device(s), then it’s better to just throw them away.

Sorry to hear that Doc, but hopefully with the advice you received you will not have the problem again.

I personally don't think it has anything to do with "cello or no cello" and I always take the cello off my cigars before they go in any of my humidors!

This happened to my flippin cubans that were in boxes, I think the top got off my distilled water and then I used it.

The ones stored in baggies or were not affected.
Now that I am moving I might get a more furniture grade humidor at some point and ditch the cooler, but I haven't been smoking a lot anyway.
