Hey new member from IL here! I've been looking at these forums for the past few days and they seem very friendly and a great place to discuss cigars and smoking.

I mainly smoke cigarettes, but in fact I had my first -- and probably last cigar today. I don't know if I was simply smoking it wrong, but towards the end of the cigar, I started to feel slightly light headed. I paid no attention and kept smoking, at first it was kind of pleasant.

Shortly thereafter I became severely nauseated and broke into a cold sweat. I stumbled back inside and threw up twice on the floor before crashing in my bed. A few minutes later, I threw up again, but was unable to make it out of the bed, and it ended up all over my sheets and leg. :barf:

I am now permanently scared from smoking cigars. If I even think about it, I start to feel nauseated again. For the record I was smoking a Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight cigar.

Welcome aboard! We're all cigar smokers here for the most part and love the habit I've seen people get sick when smoking cigars too fast considering it was your first that's probably what made you sick. A cigar is much like a fine wine or scotch and must be enjoyed leisurely.

First step to smoking a cigar is not to smoke it like a cigarette take your time let the smoke coat your mouth and enjoy the flavours it has to offer and whatever you do don't inhale.

Goodluck hope you try a cigar again some time after you get over your experience.

Thank God, premium hand rolled cigars are nothing like cigarettes. I don't even like the taste of a cigarette any more. They, as you found out cannot be smoked like a cigarette either! By the way, the one you tried is a good smoke; if done correctly!

There's a lot of things you didn't mention for us to help you. It sounds like you inhaled the smoke? Did you smoke it on an empty stomach?

I would suggest starting with a light to medium bodied smoke instead.

Hi 003,

Welcome to the BOTL. As many have mentioned above we don't have all the facts. But one thing I would add is that you picked a full bodied cigar for your first try. That may have been a mistake as well. When I started smoking cigars I stayed mainly with the mild sticks, but as I smoked more my palate changed and I have graduated to fuller body cigars. But I have also experienced what you mention, although not to the full extent.

I've smoked a full body cigar on an empty stomach and I got a very harsh nicotine rush. Followed by nausea, cold sweats and light-headedness, so I'm careful about that now.

Any of the brothers here can recommend some sticks. For the mild side you might try 1876, CAO Gold Label, or Carlos Tarano. For the medium side you can go to Arturo Fuente - take your pick.

If you would like to do some good reading try the Cigar Cyclopedia. If you want I can even email you a copy - 44 files @ 44MB.

I'm in Southern IL, 60 miles due East of St. Louis.

later,

Am I the only one that finds it odd that someone would join a cigar forum after smoking his first and only cigar, gets repeatedly sick and swears never to smoke another?

Now having said that, if you decide to keep with it, and learn how to enjoy the pleasures of cigar smoking, well then, Welcome to the club.

Not to laugh at another's misfortune, but that's funny. I went through the same thing about 10 years ago. I swore that was the nastiest thing I'd ever had, and I'd never do it again. Now, it's one of the best parts of my day, and very relaxing. As others have said, it's like a fine wine, meant to be savored, and done very slowly!

Hope you stick with it!!

Hello and welcome.. Troll in the dungeon! hehe.

Do not smoke cigars like cigarettes. YOu don't inhale cigars, so need to hit them hard, which is probably why you got sick. The thing about cigars is they are to be enjoyed over time.

That was my first thought, too.

Welcome if you do stay.

I had purchased two of these cigars and I just had the second one. I made extra sure to smoke it slowly (took over an hour I'd say) and to not take anything into the lungs. I had to put it out when there was ~2 inches left as the taste was getting too strong and I got light headed again :(

Nauseous as well, but this time I had eaten before I smoked and had some root beer on hand, and when I was done, sat down and rested. If I had gotten up and tried to move around I'm sure I would have puked again, this wasn't very enjoyable :(

Still no issues with cigarettes...

Sounds like you faired better. Again, this is a medium-full body cigar so I would suggest something lighter without a spicy cameroon wrapper that the Hoyo Ex has. There's no shame in smoking something less full bodied. You build up tolerances like you do with cigs.

Cigarettes may be no problem, but there's at least 100x more tobacco in a cigar. When you say the cigar gets "too strong" does it feel hot? You probably need to purge your cigar. Here's a thread with a lot of useful information regarding purging: [ame="http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php?t=3294"]Purging - BOTL Cigar Forums - Brothers of the Leaf[/ame]
