Just got this email from the President....

Many of our customers have been wondering why our websites have been slow or inaccessible for the past five days. The problem was due to a targeted Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, similar to what has recently been happening to some large government websites, financial institutions, and e-commerce sites in the U.S. and abroad. For those of you who do not know what a "DDoS" is and what it is not, I will briefly explain. First and foremost, no one's personal data has been compromised. I want to assure you that all your personal data is safe, protected and intact.

So what is DDoS? These attacks occur when a flood of traffic is deliberately sent to a particular website in an effort to overwhelm the site and prevent legitimate users from getting through. This is exactly what occurred over the last five days to famous-smoke.com and to some of our competitors in the premium cigar industry. WE ARE NOW BACK, and I have taken steps to ensure that this cyber terrorism will never happen to Famous Smoke Shop again:

We have contracted with experts in the internet security industry to mitigate the attack, and our website was successfully brought back on line Sunday evening. Our security consultants will continue to monitor our network traffic to combat the continued attacks. In partnership with our security consultants, we have performed exhaustive security audits of our networks, servers and websites. Again, I want to reiterate that in no way was our security breached or our data compromised. Although the attackers were successful in generating enough traffic to bring our websites down, we were not "hacked," and all of your personal data has been, and continues to remain, secure.

Like many of you, until a few days ago, I had never heard of DDoS, nor did I understand how widespread this problem has become in the ecommerce sector, how vulnerable we were, or what the consequences of such cyber terrorism would be. Had all retail cigar websites been affected, as some others were, your online cigar supply lines would have been severed completely.

Unfortunately for me, while this disaster was occurring, I was in Nicaragua and Honduras, and did not fully understand what was happening to my company. You can only imagine my frustration. All I was thinking about was creating new products for my customers, and I'm pleased to report that we have some excellent new surprise cigars on the way.

Thankfully, right now our company is functioning normally again. We were attacked. Jealous competitor? Anti-smoking terrorist? It's impossible to know at this point. Suffice to say, we are doing everything in our power to get to the bottom of it. Moreover, because of the deliberate targeting of our industry, and the scale and duration of the attack, Federal authorities have taken an active interest in pursuing the attackers and we intend to cooperate fully.

Even more frustrating was being unable to communicate and inform you about the situation until now, since our email was out of action as well. Therefore, I apologize to all of you, my valued customers, for the inconvenience and the silence.

Sincerely,

Arthur Zaretsky
President,
Famous Smoke Shop-PA, Inc.

I think it was VERY smart for them to come out and say this. I told SteveR at cbid as much too, but I don't expect them or CI to say anything about it.

Unless they tell people, to most it will just look like the sites are incompetent--unable to maintain their own network or something--which is BAD for business. Others will worry that the site was "hacked" and that their personal information is not secure--which is also BAD for buisness.

By coming out and saying what was going on, it clears the air and restores confidence in the company.

I totally agree, all companies affected cigar related or not really need to come forth and be honest with customers, in the long run it will be better for business.

Once I got the email I figured the best thing to do was post it here for all my friends and brothers to read!

Nice one Larry.

Always with the good info when needed!

I agree with the other brothers here too... this communication is a great way to preserve your image and to maintain traffic to your site in the long run.

Hey, they have taken measures against future attacks and probably beefed up other security in the process... do we know what their competition has done? (if anything)

I would be surprised if it was a jealous competitor... Still, its interesting that many Cigar websites were attacked.

I was actively trying to get on CI while all this was happening...funny thing was that I was getting emails (specials/promos) from them. I hate to say it, but CI did lose an order from me during that timeframe, it went to Holt's instead. Sure, I could've called, too lazy though, plus I like the paper trail.

anyone having issues with CigarMonster.com and the firefox web browser?
I haven't been able to access CigarMonster for days and still can't. I've been jonesing for a dynomite 5-pack special from them. (Recently I had scored a 5'er of TEMPUS Robustos for $16.98 and then a couple days later a 5'er of MAXX Toros for $9.98! Free Shipping on both. Really hard to beat.)

Thanks for the post of the email you received from the Pres. of fss, Larry. It was a relief to hear that they were not incompetent, but under attack from...?

Maybe that goon platoon who call themselves ANONYMOUS.:jitb:

They'll attack anything that they consider "bad" (like Religious organizations, tobacco, etc.) just because they can, and thrive on getting their kicks by creating havoc.

They occaisionally get busted for it, too, so here's hoping...

I didn't realize Famous was having issues and tried to order one of their cigarmonster deals. I sent an email to their customer support and a couple days later I got a reply that they would honor all deals from cigar monster while their site was down. I was happy as it was a cigar I would have normally not picked up at regular price but they had it for a steal.

Then the reason I hate calling in orders as the customer rep offered me a steal of a deal for a sampler and I bit, lol.

Let's hope they find the culprits, but chances are we will never know who attacked them! :dunno:
