So, I know we've got some shotgunners on the board. With any luck and some fiscal frugalness I'm on my way to a new addition to the gun safe before the end of the year. The wife has decided that she might actually be able to get on board with breaking clays now and then. Can't get her to the range to punch holes in targets, but this looks like it might be enjoyable to her.

So, with that preamble...thoguhts on an AFFORDABLE double? Yeah, yeah, I know, the two words don't go together, but the reality of the situation is that I won't have thousands to spend and even if I did the wife would nix doing so. As to pumps and autos...well, if I absolutely have to, but I have those on the list for home defense options and I'd rather have something a bit nicer for birds/clays.

You won't find much under $1k for new guns. CZ makes a few under a grand, I think the Canvasback, Mallard, and one other. Good guns, but I would check out gun broker or some site like that and get a used gun. You could probably get a killer deal on a used Beretta or something.

You're right, affordable double dont go together, used is probably your best bet.

I will say I enjoy shooting clays much more with my auto with the plug removed than my double. Over unders are great if you are good enough and shooting at a level to really need 2 different chokes but for just having fun auto is the way to go.

I shoot a lot of clay with my Mossberg 500 and I love it. I understand why people perfer the over unders or side by sides but unless you are shooting competitively I cant see spending that much money for a good gun you can get for a fraction of the price.

Thanks guys. I'll be sure to check out Shotgun News when I start seriously searching.

I understand the auto and pump argument, but you guys aren't listening to me. ;) Those are already on the list for "other uses". Gots to have the argument to make when I want BOTH! :D

Before I got married I shot a bunch of tourneys at River Ranch and in Winter Haven with my Ruger Red Label. I have always love that thing. I got mine for around $1200 from a shop in Lakeland.

I bought my wife a 28-gauge Mossberg O/U for a wedding present for about $350. That little thing is SWEET! It has an extractor, not an ejector, and 28" barrels. I've shot more than a few clean rounds with it. I'd check out the Mossbergs for sure.

Thanks guys. I've looked at Mossberg and their Silver series along with Stoeger. Quite a few models being offered in the sub $1K range nowadays.

I'll be checking for used deals, but who knows what'll be out there by the time I convince the wife to let me buy. Anyway, thanks for the advise guys. I knew I'd be hearing from you Mike. :) I remember reading about some of your bird trips.

With any luck I'll get/find a 12/20 combo as I think it would be prudent to get the wife working with a 20 at first so as not to scare her off with recoil.
