I went to PM a BOTL only to find that under his name it says "banned" and the option to PM was not there? While I am not asking what happened to this particular person, I am asking so as to avoid the same fate for myself.

Also, it is like I tell the kids I tutor, if one person has a question, I am certain that 2 or 3 others do but were afraid to speak up.

What gives?

The mods here are not quick to pull the trigger when it comes to banning someone, so it must have been a pretty serious offense, or numerous offenses after several warnings. Personal attacks on members or deals that have been underhanded are things that would get someone run off the board.

Is there a certain way of identifying a mod or are they just out there?

Examples of bans (but not limited to) spamming, being disruptive, threatening or attacking another member. If you show good etiquette, treat and respect others and are helping build the community then you have nothing to worry about.
