I have the 70% beads in my desktop humidor. (One on the right is in my desktop)

I have had them in there for maybe a month now and today I took them out to see if it needed more distilled water. The stick just lies right on the cedar inside and there was white stuff on the wood what I believe to be pieces of dried out beads. Why are the beads crumbling and falling out of the perforations? I don't smash them around. Are they too wet when I refill them? I take the black cap off the stick and pour full cup of water over them. Is that too much?
I could maybe lay a plastic baggie under it?
Has anyone else had this happen?
Here is an older picture it is much fuller now days.
