Subject: FW: Read what a White Reporter wrote in a Georgia Newspaper (YES!)
Date: Thu, 10 Sep 2009 07:39:12 -0400

Andrew M. Manis is associate professor of history at Macon State College in Georgia and wrote this for an editorial in the Macon Telegraph.

Andrew M. Manis: When Are WE Going to Get Over It?

For much of the last forty years, ever since America "fixed" its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, "When are African Americans finally going to get over it?
Now I want to ask:
"When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?
Recent reports that "Election Spurs Hundreds' of Race Threats, Crimes" should frighten and infuriate every one of us. Having grown up in "Bombingham," Alabama in the 1960s, I remember overhearing an avalanche of comments about what many white classmates and their parents wanted to do to John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King.
Eventually, as you may recall, in all three cases, someone decided to do more than "talk the talk."

Since our recent presidential election, to our eternal shame we are once again hearing the same reprehensible talk I remember from my boyhood.

We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent.
Conservative whites have been in power 28 of the last 40 years. Even during the eight Clinton years, conservatives in Congress blocked most of his agenda and pulled him to the right. Yet never in that period did I read any headlines suggesting that anyone was calling for the assassinations of presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either of the Bushes. Criticize them, yes.
Call for their impeachment, perhaps. But there were no bounties on their heads. And even when someone did try to kill Ronald Reagan, the perpetrator was non-political mental case who wanted merely to impress Jody Foster.

But elect a liberal who happens to be Black and we're back in the sixties again. At this point in our history, we should be proud that we've proven what conservatives are always saying -- that in America anything is possible, EVEN electing a black man as president.
But instead we now hear that school children from Maine to California are talking about wanting to "assassinate Obama."
Fighting the urge to throw up, I can only ask, "How long?"
How long before we white people realize we can't make our nation, much less the whole world, look like us?
How long until we white people can - once and for all - get over this hell-conceived preoccupation with skin color?
How long until we white people get over the demonic conviction that white skin makes us superior?
How long before we white people get over our bitter resentments about being demoted to the status of equality with non-whites?

How long before we get over our expectations that we should be at the head of the line merely because of our white skin?
How long until we white people end our silence and call out our peers when they share the latest racist jokes in the privacy of our white-only conversations?

I believe in free speech, but how long until we white people start making racist loudmouths as socially uncomfortable as we do flag burners?
How long until we white people will stop insisting that blacks exercise personal responsibility, build strong families, educate themselves enough to edit the Harvard Law Review, and work hard enough to become President of the United States, only to threaten to assassinate them when they do?

How long before we start "living out the true meaning" of our creeds, both civil and religious, that all men and women are created equal and that "red and yellow, black and white" all are precious in God's sight?
Until this past November 4, I didn't believe this country would ever elect an African American to the presidency. I still don't believe I'll live long enough to see us white people get over our racism problem.
But here's my three-point plan:
First, everyday that Barack Obama lives in the White House that Black Slaves Built, I'm going to pray that God (and the Secret Service) will protect him and his family from us white people.

Second, I'm going to report to the FBI any white person I overhear saying, in seriousness or in jest, anything of a threatening nature about President Obama.
Third, I'm going to pray to live long enough to see America surprise the world once again, when white people can "in spirit and in truth" sing of our damnable color prejudice,
"We HAVE overcome."
**************************************
It takes a Village to protect our President!!!

Interesting reading. Maybe there is hope

i feel badly that there are feelings like this in this day and age.
my only gripe about obama's color is that he is GREEN. and by green, i mean inexperienced and surrounds himself with extreme views that run contrary to my own.
i'd feel that way no matter what the man's race is.

I am upset that my country voted an extreme left wing liberal into office. I dont care what color a lib is. I will not vote for a white liberal or a black liberal.

Before Colin Powell turned on the Republican party, I would have gladly voted for him based on his service to our country.

I don't agree with many of the opinions espoused in this article. I feel the writer is partaking in the type of mass generalization that he is supposedly rallying against.

here is just 1 line

"When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?

White America IS over our ridiculous obsession with skin color. I think about 45% of all white voters voted for Obama. Enough of those were Republicans who crossed party lines and helped give Obama a pretty good margin of victory. If those Republicans were racist, they would not have crossed. They thought Obama was the better choice. They didnt care what color he was, and they voted for him.

what about the whites who did not vote for Obama. were they racists? or were they just Republicans who wont vote Democratic? That describes me. For a few years, Colin Powell was always regarded as a Presidential candidate. The Republican party liked him and so did I. Wait a minute, I think he is black?

But I do have this all figured out now. Those whites who voted for Obama are wonderful, beautiful people. Those whites who voted for McCain are bigots.

Dennis, the gentleman you reference is not a reporter, he's a professor. I work with professors. The majority are pompous, arrogant, condescending and feel that everyone should share their opinion or be condemned. He's also the author of Macon Black and White and serves on the steering committee of Macon’s Center for Racial understanding. He has a vested interest in separatism, without it he has no cause to fight for. A liberal without a cause is akin to a marionette without it's strings.

Yes there are many white people that hate but I think I'd be pretty accurate in my assessment if I said that there are more blacks on average that hate whites than the other way 'round. Personally I think it's about time that we all got over it.

I could have agreed with you except for the last paragraph. That statement is unbeleiveable but I would fight for your right to say it. What does that mean Blacks on average? What are u comparing that to. Of the blacks I know, we don't sit around talking about hating white people. I for one hate racism on any level. If you were to speak to Black people I would say that the Black community is mostly conservative. I don't mean rebulican but surely centrist. So your statement is wrong in my book.

OK, "hate" is not the right word, maybe I should have said dislike, distrust or simply have disdain for. It's funny but I probably associate with more blacks in a day than you do and we have very open and honest discussions on the subject all the time. A day doesn't go by when something doesn't come up on TV or in the newspapers to spark a topic on racism. I'm not saying that the feelings of either race is illegitimate because what we all feel is very real to our person whether they might be exaggerated or not.

I think that it's because of my ability to understand where these feelings come from and more importantly why these feeling exist that makes it possible for us to have such honest discussions. While you may not agree with me on the above I guarantee that the majority of the black folk that I work with do because they've told me so. I can also tell you that on the average more whites share a common emotion pertaining to blacks than the other way around. It's not hate, it's fear. But that's for another discussion.
