I received the Holt's catalog today and A. Fuente offers a "lime-green Claro" wrapper.

What's the story about these wrappers? Full, medium , mild ?
Taste ? Gimmick ?

Thanks !

:barf: The only one I tried tasted like grass, not that I normally eat grass but I assume that is what grass tastes like. :barf:

Interesting cigar that used to be very popular. Try it at least once.

They are probably the best candella out there, worth a try. I used to smoke them from time to time, reading this makes me want one...They are mild, they do taste a little green, but not in a overpaowering way.

Candela wrapper is not very popular anymore. Cigars are moving to the more full side and you can't really achieve that with a candela wrapper IMO. I may be wrong but the handful I have smoked have all been mild or maybe mild/medium and the green wrapper gives it a grassy taste. Not really to my liking.

Candela, also called claro claro (claro is really a light tan) was so popular in the U.S. back in the '50's and '60's that it was also called American Market Selection or AMS. I know, 'cause I was there. :bdaycake: The green comes from a lot of chlorophyl. Candelas have a high level of natural sweetness from all that chlorophyl. They can also taste somewhat grassy to some people, and the smoke can have an acrid aroma, kind of like the way autumn used to smell before it became illegal in most places to rake up your leaves and set fire to the piles.

I like to smoke a candela a few times a year as a change of pace. IMO, the best come from Fuente, and candela 8-5-8's are usually pretty easy to find. They improve with age. Try one with an open mind --- you might like it. :togetherl

Im gunna go ahead and disagree with most everyone here and be an oddball that really likes candela. Ive had the Don Tomas and the Fuente Candelas and I think that they bring something very unique and, in my opinion, enjoyable to the table. For a mild cigar with a lot of sweet and unique character you cant beat them. The Fuente 8-5-8 Candelas which I think are better than the Don Tomas, are very sweet and with hints of sweet bread (sorta like corn bread). For me, I also enjoy the appearance. I think Its sorta fun. At the very least, give them a shot. They arent too expensive and like the old saying goes, dont knock it till you try it.
