HD TV help

My wife and I are looking at getting our first HDTV soon. We have found one at the local target that looks like its a good buy.

The one we are looking at is a VIZIO 22" Class 1080p LCD HDTV - Black (VA22LFHDTV10T)

We would like to get something around 26" and the best video quality without buying a brand we have never heard of. Is there a major diference from the 720p to the 1080p?

So all the tech geeks send me some advise
Our price range is less that 320 or so.

the 1080 is the better picture quality, and is noticble if you have the hd channels. On that note, if you buy the 1080 hd, I strongly suggest getting the hd channels, especialy for football. Very soon all brodcasts will be put out in 1080 anyways, so if you look long term its better to get the 1080 right now.

1080P is the best you can get right now, but depending on what Hz the TV is 60Hz, 120Hz, 240Hz will also make a huge difference.

my parents have the 22in Vizio. It is amazing. Great picture quality. And for a small TV you can't beat it.

Not always true...a 720p @120 Hz will look better than a 1080p @60 Hz.

Unless you are going to use Blu-ray you will see only slight differences.

I 2nd this.

720p is already a great improvement over standard... go with something a bit larger (32-37'') and look for what has the highest contrast ratio in the class you want... (1,000:1 is ok, 10,000:1 is great!!)

Comcast only broadcasts in 1080i... (well, the HD is 1080i)
I believe some other companies do offer 1080p channels....

Agreed. At that budget you should go for a larger screen and a 720p resolution. It's been my experience that at that size of a TV, you're not going to notice much of a difference between 720p/1080i and a 1080p TV.

Thanks guys it looks like our tv cabinet will fit a 26" TV so I think we will stick in that range. We really don't want to have to get a new cabinet yet.

I want it now but the wife wants to wait....

A lot of inaccurate info so far which I think Electric Sheep was hinting about. Broadcasts only come over at 720 right now so you will see absolutely no difference between a 720 and a 1080. Literally impossible even if someone tells you otherwise. Will broadcasts change to 1080 eventually, sure. When, who knows.

As far as the advantages of 1080...
1. Blueray DVDs support the 1080
2. When the day comes that TV comes across in 1080, you will be prepared.

Some people think 1080 looks better because they are comparing their Samsung 1080 picture to someone elses Vizio 720 picture. In other words, they are comparing 2 different TV's. That's when the game changes...major difference in picture quality of brands, which the price usually reflects.

Absolutely, if the input can't keep up with the output, it doesn't matter. I have a 1080p 120hz (gf hates the TruMotion) but I only got the better one cause I have inputs that make it worthwhile (Xbox 360 mainly, bluray to come) but shop around and do your research
