I recently got my 84 RX7 GLS-SE running after a few years in the garage... I was so excited to have a stick shift again (simple pleasures, huh?). In any case, I was about to go for a quick drive out on the back roads when I saw a CHP pass by my drive way. What luck, that's the third time I've seen a CHP this far out in my 6 years living here! In any case, I thought it best to actually go legit and get some insurance and take the vehicle off non-op.

After shopping around, I have come to the conclusion that I am about to take it up the butt. Averages seem to run me about $900/yr for the absolute minimum of insurance!

So I'm putting it out to the brothers: who do you guys use, how do you like them, and how much are they setting you back? I believe the lowest I found was Geico's rate of $540/yr, or $636/yr with uninsured motorist protection, which is a smart investment out here (and I'm saying that with the most politically correct tone I can muster).

Geico here... it really was the cheapest when we were shopping and I was a bit nervous because of that, but we needed coverage and I was a bit lazy.

Turns out that their service is excellent (in my experience) my wife rear ended two cars at once during our last move and the whole process start to end was awesome.

The rates went up after the accident for obvious reasons, but I was pleasantly surprised by how little the change was.

Depending on your age you will be taking it up the "butt" until you are at least 25 and then they will change again when you hit 30. If your record is clean you can negotiate with some companies. My record is squeeky clean and I have an SUV and BMW that I pay $66 a month for and that is with Geico. My motorcycle I go thru Progressive and they charge only $75 a year.

An update fellas: I actually gave a ring to Allstate and talked with an agent. I was able to negotiate a pretty darn good deal: $565/yr to insure both my Mazda and my current daily driver, a Honda Accord. That's excellent because I've been paying $900/yr for my Accord by itself.

I guess it pays to shop around. They are the lowest that I have found yet.

Thanks for the help everyone.

In a State of Confusion
I just recently switched to Auto Owners for both business and personal, they seem to be targeting Missouri. I shop all my insurance business and personal every year when it comes due and have saved money by doing so, I was a State Farm guy for 15+ years with no claims and when my son turned 16 they tried to double my rates (he started working for me that year). I was loyal paying them a little extra rather than switch but have found it better to shop around you can save by shopping instead of being loyal, go figure.

USAA. Restricted membership.

Well if you or your family was military you might be able to get my insurance. I've had them for over six years now and they insure my house, cars, guns, and small valuables. HO is only like $350 a year and at 26 with a 25 yo wife our vehicle premium is like $670 for full coverage on two vehicles for six months. The policy renews every six months and I always get a rate drop at that point so I'll probably be paying closer to $1000 a year before long.

I just recently switched to Auto Owners for both business and personal,
I just read in an Insurance Claims magazine that Auto Owners was recently rated #1 by consumers. The group of consumers consisted of several thousand people whom recently submitted a claim and it covered all the major carriers. Insurance is just like anything else, you get what you pay for. Cheapest isn't always best.
