Smoking your rare cigars

As I sit here smoking one of my rare cigars part of me wishes that I would have saved it for longer than I did. A rare cigar to me is ether because it is no longer being made or too expensive for me to justify purchasing again. I've always had one special box of cigars in my humi that I rarely dig into and smoke from.

For example I'm smoking a tat miami from 4 years ago that I got in a trade. This cigar is amazing. The good news is that I can buy another tat and age it and share a similar experience, but I'm having a hard time firing up my Fuente 858 sungrown since it would prolly be the only one I ever smoke. Or even cracking open my last mazo of Pepin made Padilla Achilles.

Kind of rambling lol. Anyone have any similar experiences with your "rare" cigars?

I have a few Franks that I want to smoke but I know that they will probably not be made again so its holding me back from smoking them. However, cigars are meant to be smoked right?

858SGs are still out there. Smoke it up, that is all its good for.

Lets put it this way: If I know it's a one-off or never to be made again, I will hesitate to smoke it (more on this later). If it is just a rare cigar that is still around, still sold or too expensive to enjoy regularly, I will burn it whenever the mood strikes. One thing I've learned in this hobby is to never say never. Friends are amazing connections & before you know it, you might just experience something you never imagined sooner than you think.

Regarding the one-offs or ultra rare's, I've even run into more of these than I would have expected. Like a smoking enthusiasts humidor, his list of sources & friends grows beyond your wildest dreams. Today's "White Whale" is tomorrow's super find. After my first Don Candido I had MAJOR 'smokers' remorse. After my 2nd and subsequent purchases, I respect them, but no longer expect them to be my last.

Moral of the story is that a cigar is for smoking. Respect it & give it the attention & moment that it deserves but never hold out for that unknown time. It just may never come. Or worse yet, it may come & be joined by a cigar that would better have been smoked years prior...

858 SGs are definitely out there. The more you're online, the more you'll learn where to look for things like that... You might pay for them, but you'll get them.

Ive been looking for 858 sg for about 3 years man LOL must be looking in the wrong places

Boxes are being sold all the time, I believe the going price is about 350 a box though, far from the original msrp. but they are out there.

Interestingly enough, one of the reasons I started my site to try and help people understand that it is OK to smoke those "rare" cigars...that you should in fact REVEL in the cigar you are smoking, not hoard them...

I am hoping to lead by example...lol!

That's why they were rolled to begin with, yes.

I have a few Franks that I want to smoke but I know that they will probably not be made again so its holding me back from smoking them.

I smoked a Frank last Tuesday, it was fantastic, much better I thought than when they first came out and I thought they were good then. I only have two left, they'll be gone most likely by years end. I don't smoke a lot of churchills, with the exception of the SW.

Now, saving cigars for "special occasions":

I think, IMHO that people do this to often and for to long and it can actually cause that smoking experience, once it happens to be a let down. Example, you have said cigar, whatever your special cigar(s) is and basically you're saving it, look at it once a month in your humidor, thinking, waiting, aging just for that special occasion. Now, 5 years down the road, you finally take it out, clip it, light it and it's OK. Not spectacular, not awesome, but OK, or good. The reason I say this is that you've put that cigar on such a pedestal, and had such high expectations of it because you've basically worshiped that cigar for so long, that it just doesn't deliver what it may have if you treated it more as a regular cigar, or above average and just enjoyed the damn thing.

Now don't get me wrong, I have "special cigars" as well and every one of them is being saved for a special event, but for me, that special event may be next week, or next month when I go to a HERF with a bunch of buddies and want to have a great cigar. I'm just not going to break out an Opus Maduro, or AF13 or the like while I'm working at the lounge. I'm also not going to "save" it for years waiting for the holy grail of smoking experiences either. I went to a HERF in San Diego this summer, burned a lot of rare sticks, gave away some rare sticks, it was a HERF, just a HERF, a great one, but none the less, just a bunch of guys smoking cigars. That was special enough for me.

This saturdy night while at work I will be smoking a special cigar.
My Son is playing in his first hockey game on saturday morning after turning 4 last week. He also just got over the swine flu. So I am burning something special.

i have to admit i have a few that i keep buried for that "special occasion". there are, however, a few things that can happen (besides the whole dieing thing). if it's something you've never tried, it may not be what you built it up to be, and you'll be disappointed for waiting for it that long. or, it may be fantastic, in which case you can start immediately to look for another!
if it's one that you've had before, it could actually change while stored (hopefully for the better) when you revisit it. OR, as wade said, you share it with a brother who has never tried it. i'll let you guess which one really makes you feel the best!
