so... im a mechanic in the army and im currently in iraq. i ordered a humidor and humidifier online and it came in and the world was all happy and good and whatnot. my humidifier took mold, so i removed it from the box and it dried out. no big deal. right now my humidifier is a damp rag and the hygrometer reads 70 so im ok

i have no experience in a humidor of my own. i worked in a cigar store and my job was the morning when i opened the store and re-filled all the big humidifiers and i had my own box in there and the bossman took care of the real specific stuff like mold.

ive seen humidor solutions online a bunch of times and i assume a humidor solution kills mold. number one question is am i right? when i took a deeper look into humidor solution i found that it was made up of a 50/50 mix propylene glycol and water. im a mechanic. i dont know if you guys know or not but propylene glycol is antifreeze. a 50/50 mix is whats cooling the engine in your vehicle right now. i think it's experiment time

No the PG solution will not get rid of mold. It may prevent it in most cases but that's debateable. My suggestion to you would be to open up your humidifier and remove the florist foam (the green thing) inside it and replace it with the damp rag if you can't find florist foam in Iraq. What most people on here have done is remove the florist foam and replace it with beads from www.hearfeltindustries.com the beads come in 60%, 65% and 70% RH I believe and require a few squirts of distilled water once in a while making life much easier.

I would love to send you some but given my location and yours I don't think a package containing mysterious looking beads will make it through the inspection but I can try if you send me your mailing address.

PS: it would be a good idea to pop into the newbie lounge and introduce yourself. This is an extremely generous community and guys on here are always trying to help out people in the armed forces.

Welcome to BOTL. I too would agree, get rid of the foam and go to crystals or beads of some sort. Try the search engine, you'll find tons of info. This is a fantastic community, you've come across.

BTW thanks very much for your service to this great country. God Bless.

Well since these fine gents have addressed your problem you should head over to the intro section and introduce yourself. What do you work on and where are you stationed in Iraq. Matter of fact you should just PM me your addy.
