Girl suspended for empty shotgun shell at Des Moines school

Empty shell: Pretty stupid for her to be suspended but she was probably being used as an example to stop a possible trend from forming. Stupid but I'm not going to cry about it - I'm surprised the teacher she was bringing it in to show didn't tell her it would be a bad idea or if he knew, stick up for her and say he told her to bring it in if that was the case.
Steak knife: No argument, it's a knife.

These sorts of things fit into the category of preventattive maintanance in alot of cases.
What if some kid who didn't get the whole story but saw a bag full of shells thought it was OK to bring some shells of their own in, but that weren't empty? Or to the earlier stated example, what if a kid snagged the steak knife because he was having one of those days and saw an opportunity?
That being said... I get the blanket policies and why they are there... besides, since when has a day or two out of school on suspension ever cost a kid more than some hard work to catch up?
Has anyone ever really had to explain that sixth grade suspension to the dean of admissions anywhere? Or to a prospective employer? Not hardly.

This should fall on the parent(s) as much as it does on the student. Blanket policies like this should be in place. However, exceptions can and should be made. For the kid who brought the knife (was that the Cub Scout story or another one?), absolutely no way should he have brought that. For this, maybe, maybe not. If there was any kind of uncertainty, a call/email should have gone to the school to get permission or a firm 'no.' None of this would have been an issue if the parent(s) had done that.

My fault, I probably should have posted this in the Debate Room. In my defense, I was referring to the classic definition of Jihad not the modern day bastardization of the term used by today's extremists. I should have made that clear, as evidenced by your negative connotation of it. Apologies to any that may have been offended, it was unintended.
Suspending either one of these kids is ridiculous. Teaching them why it's wrong without such a drastic punishment would have been much more appropriate. Another shining example of enacting policy to selfishly cover your ass without putting education or what is truly right first.

Thing about the knife inncident. I hope the kid that brought it dosn't get to big of a suspension. It sound like he brought it to only cut up his steak. Next time he has steak. He will have to have it already cut up.
I remember when I was in school we had a wood carving class and were issued knifes. I bet that program dosen't exist anymore. Also in metal shop we made knifes out of flat bar. Of course it wasn't a knife though. It was a "letter opener". I also made a bat out of maple in wood shop. It was a about 24'' That was project "fish bat".
How times have changed.
