With honesty and his best interests in mind. He will or won't be open to your thoughts. If he's a friend, he'll think about what you say.
In this community it can be a 50/50 half the folks do enjoy like chuck & myself and the other half have a problem. I just want to help a brother out.

Some people just have an addictive personality and it doesn't matter what hobby they end up in, it consumes them completely.
Uh, yeah. Well, uh....so like that's me for sure. LOL!

For the past 6 months or so though, I've been actively trying to NOT make cigars my "hobby" anymore. I quit the collecting/chasing part and am now just focused on the enjoyment and hanging with friends part of this cigar thing. At this point, I'd rather smoke a Flor de Oliva with friends than hoard a bunch of "don't-wanna-smoke-em-gotta-save-em" REs and LEs and shit like that in my humi.

I got other hobbies to fulfill the collecting side of my personality, and I've turned cigar smoking back to what it started out as for me: FUN and ENJOYMENT and RELAXATION.

It's so much better (for me) nowadays.

So now you focus on shoes???:lookaroun

The way I see it its a far less harmful addiction than anything else out there. If your addicted to alcohol you're drinking money away, if you're addicted to crack/cocain you're snorting it away, if you're addicted to cigarettes or weed you're smoking it away.

Cigars are beautiful things you buy to age, you buy to collect and at the end of the day if you realise you're waaaaay over your head with this hobby (bordering on addiction) you can sell whatever you want and recoup your investment. Come to think of it its the best investment one can make a well aged box of almost anything will go above the market price so I don't see the harm in people buying even if they do it simply for bragging rights when they realise they're over their heads they can turn around and simply sell, host auctions or if times are desperate trade for food.

i have only been doing this a little over a year. In the beginning there was incredible excitement and some overspending. You want to try everything. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement. Fortunately things have leveled off. A cleverly placed 200 stick megabomb helped clear out the humidor and now i only pick up a fiver once every two weeks. I am increasing my humi a few sticks at a time instead of boxes at a time . I watch the daily's for anything interesting. I actually passed up a 10 for 6 sale on tats and padilla in philly last night because i was over budget for cigars stuff if anyone interested Liberty Tobacco 50 dollars off a box or buy6 get 4 free .so mucch for a moderation thread. just my .02

For me smoking a cigar is a way to relax & spend time with friends. I smoke at most two a week. I am not like some of my friends that can just sit there & smoke stick after stick. I enjoy a good smoke even more so now that I don't indulge quite as often. Do I make more purchases than I should? Yes. But I take care of my bills first.

I find the best way to give unsolicited advice to a friend is by example. People with addictive personalities don't want to be preached to about their alleged problem, in fact you may just drive them further into denial. Next time you're in a shop together pick up a stick, drool over it, then show a little restraint and put it back.

Hobby, addiction, lifestyle. You choose. To me, cigars are part of a bigger picture. A lifestyle of memories, friendships and relaxation. Folks know how much they can spend on anythig they buy. But, the true line is finding time to enjoy what you have purchased. Everything in moderation!

The memories and friendships you make over a cigar, sharing the passion is priceless. So $8 spent on a cigar that allows me to relax and reduce strees in my life, create a new memory and solidify a frienship is more important to me and worth spending some money. MY money can be taken from me, but that memory can never be taken away!

I wholeheartedly agree with Bill, we all know our limits... If we go over its our responsibility and choice. We can however guide some of the newbs to not go overboard with box purchases until they have had at least a 5'ver and simple things like this... I know we have all bought a box out of lust and regretted it... :) .. Wait that sounded funny....

Anyway... Cigars are about the friendships and taking the time.. Cigars wouldn't mean nearly as much to me without all of you guys, the camaraderie is what makes it for me.

As usual well said Bill.

Besides cost, there must be a limit as to the quantity of cigar smoking that is healthy. Several years ago a cigar-smoking doctor wrote an article on CA's site that one or two a day was the maximum that he'd recommend. Five a day sounds a bit much for me and I wouldn't even enjoy smoking that much. Couldn't afford it, either, unless I downgraded from my current $3-5 smokes.

I just fell over the line / cliff / whatever with my latest......

OMG, someone help me!!! Trying to keep up with the jones's (ahem, Whittington's) is not easy.....LOL

Good thing I actually really enjoy everything I smoke and share in the purchase with others...Anything to rationalize it.....

I have been smoking cigars for awhile know and I usually only have one a day. I don't think I have an addiction but I can't wait to have that one cigar. So is it an addiction or a craving to just sit back and relax for a few.
I find your question to be spot on and I don't think there's an exact answer, just an idividual take.
