"I feel teachers should be responsible for detention. They should be staying after school if necessary. It's all part of it, disciplining our children," parent Mary McClean said.
I am all for spare the rod spoil the child but shouldn't disciple be left up to the parents? Education being the primary focus of a teachers role. Therefore, if said teacher had to in fact step in and disciple the child taking away from their primary task and depleting their abilities at preparing to teach the kids who want to learn why shouldn't the school be compensated for the teacher taking on added duties.

Kid acts out, they should send him home. Let the parent deal with him. Parent has to take time off work to look after little Timmy who is acting out? They'll correct that behaviour soon enough.

I could go on for days and days about this, but my blood pressure is high enough.

In theory, this is an interesting idea. In reality, the school is probably going to create much more of a headache for themselves because these will become legal issues. Is the school going to pay a lawyer to handle the lawsuit against the constitutionality of this law, or just make it go away? The amount they will pay to their lawyer will far exceed what they will get for the detention, so they will make it go away, and then what has that accomplished? In the end, the parent will have "won" when their kid has been a problem child. This is a bad idea imo.

Or get the snot beat out of them because the parent is an abuser.

When I was in school I was scared to death of my parents knowing I had detention than detention itself. With that said I think I only had it once in HS. The ride home with Mom and the come to Jesus party after was enough for me.

My kids, same approach. They are fine young adults today.

Bottom line it all starts with the parents. Schools should be there to educate, period.

This might be a good idea, but in today's society parents would find some excuse to put the blame on someone else like the school system.

My parents would of gone broke when I was in middle school. Only spent one day in detention in high school, I thought it was load of crap to be on detention for what I did. I was supposed to serve one week, they never questioned me on why I did not show up.
