What are really bad cigars to avoid?

Here is a prime example. I usually love the VSGs but a had a terrible one on Fri. and let it go after fighting with it for over 10 min. Sometimes you just get a bad smoke.
Also, I tend to avoid any smoke that has the same name as cuban brands.

In general, though any regular size cigar that is a super cheap. Paying lots dosn't insure a good smoke, but those 2$-3$ bundles usualy are under age and it's not worth aging them to see if the sucky amonia taste goes away.

Maybe I'm in a minority, by I liked the Tabacos Baez MF (Medium Filler) cigars.
I hear these are particularly awful, difficult to light, but drive the cats wild.
In all seriousness, it's a matter of experimentation. In my case I save all the bands and note on the back whether or not I liked the smoke. That helps me avoid buying "duds" in the future. That said - I think you need to smoke more than one of a particular cigar because there's always variations in the production process.

Acids are terrible. I would also recommend staying away from most machine made smokes. Generally the cigars made and sold exclusively for Thompson suck. For example, the VSOP and Victor Sinclar lines are particularly shitty.
Other comments being considered, the Flor de Oliva is a good smoke for the price and a good smoke for the beginner.

A friend presented me with a 5 box of Backgammon tubo coronas on my birthday last August. (Nice packaging with pretty red colored tube on which is printed "Cuban filler," cedar and cello wrapped.) I smoked my second one a couple of weeks ago, thinking perhaps the first one I smoked the night of my birthday was an abberation. It wasn't. I will probably own these other three for a very, very long time. Maybe bequeathing them to someone who has done me wrong at some point in my life.

Here's another vote against the Siglo. It rubbed me the wrong way when they tried to mimic the Cohiba Cuban band and name, but hey, the price was right. The smoke was dead wrong though. I'll never pick up another.
I was also turned off by a Romeo Y Julietta Reserva Real Cabinet Seleccion, but that was very early in my smoking days. Maybe I just wasn't used to it.
