As someone new to cigars one of the hardest things for me are all the nicknames. Why can't brand, size and name be enough? I seem to stay confused on what I have or am smoking. Anyone else have trouble keeping up?

I am sure that's true. But like diesels why is it also the unholy cocktail. seems to me that diesel and the size would suffice.

Ye're going to have to repeat that. Since I'm not too familiar with the Diesel I didn't quite understand that.

I always thought vitola was just the size of the cigar. So wouldnt all cigars of a certain size be the same vitola?

They would if there was a uniform standard for size/shape but vitola size (I guess that's how you'd say it) differs between manufacturer.

I actually think Diesel is the company/label, and Unholy Cocktail is the line--available in only one size. I could be wrong, of course. It's another Swedish Match owned line.

Yeah, it's just a little boring to call it a torpedo... might as well call it a unholy cocktail! LOL

Most Cuban cigars are fairly consistent when it comes to naming vitolas.. but I suppose with cigars mostly marketed in the US the manufacturers feel they need to come up with some thing new to differentiate their product from the rest:dunno:

It's also why the same wrapper is called twenty different things - Habano, Criollo, Habana-seed...

To further illustrate as of January 2009, Habanos, S.A. has over 72 parejo vitolas and 11 figurado vitolas. The difference between some is something as simple as a pigtail cap. And I'm sure they're more as every single regional release and EL seems to be a new size. As most have historically followed the Cubans, you can see why things get dicey. Perelman has simplified it in his CigarCyclopedia books. But even then there is some range and cigars that don't fit anything listed...

And another way to look at it is with cars. Just because it's a coupe doesn't mean every car manufacturer will name it "Coupe".

Probably the same reason you name a child instead of calling your son "Male Dark Hair Blue Eyes".....

Although I like that name and if anyone steals it I will be pissed!:widemouth
