I saw this being debated elsewhere, so I figured I'd ask Pete himself on twitter...

Hey Pete, @TatuajeCigars , for those of us with a legitimate humi...store your tubos with caps on or off?

He recommends out of personal preference. Just like cello. Nothing more. And it applies to any cigar.

Actually have a few questions I'd like to go directly to the source (cigar blenders) with, thanks for asking.

I had one tubo gifted to me that had just been received. The first thing I noticed when I opened it was how dry it was, it was rather crispy. When I cut the head off even after softening it up a bit in my mouth, it still split when cut. It also split several times as I was smoking it. These being freshly rolled and tubed you would think they would still be moist. However, this was not the case. It was like a flaky crispy biscuit. I was rather dissapointed.

I had the same experience with all mine. Since I put them in the vino, they have somewhat softened up a bit and not so 'crispy' as you so well put it.

This was a red btw. I have not had a black tubo yet.

Interesting observations all. The shipment that arrived in Raleigh last Friday. The consensus was that the Blacks were too dry and the Red were too wet. I'm personally taking them out of the tubes altogether just to be sure.

I will probably be keeping them in the tube. In my experiences with cuban tubos, they do create a different taste with time compared to non tubed ones, but seems like they take a lot longer to get to their prime while in the tube.

For the record, If I had the funds and the willpower, i'd store half tubed, and half out of the tube and compare them side by side over the next ten years...but oh well :) at least I can dream.

I thought it was just me, but both the black and reds seemed a bit light in weight and dry to the touch. I've un-tubed them all and placed them in one of my Vinotemps to gain some weight !

I'm personally a fan of leaving them in the tubes but maybe loosening the cap a little. They're not air tight anyway, so can't really see a harm in it and it might help it stabilize a little more....
