I was checking the beads in my humi to see if they needed some h20.
they were a bit dry so I added water like normal. This time when I sprayed they they seem to start to smoke or what looked like smoke coming from them. Has any one else had this happen? Do I need to get some more beads?
I thought this was kinda odd. Did they dry out a bit to much?
the rh has been spot on so I have not worried to much about it.

Thanks for the help.

You aren't really supposed to add a lot of water directly to the beads. A fine mist will usually do although the best way for them to suck up water is for them to absorb it from a source (cup of water) on their own (this is way to time consuming but a good way to charge the beads..) Once they crack they will start to deteriorate in which case they will no longer serve their purpose..

Also, if the beads are all wet or all dry or close to it and your humidity is spot on, I would double check the accuracy of your hygro.. When the beads are 50/50 in color or so you know that the RH is what the beads are set at... I hardly ever trust my hygros anymore, they can be on today but need a recalibration in 2 weeks..

I didn't add a lot of water just sprayed them with a fine mist. the beads are usually right in the middle where they are not to wet or dry.

It's dust from the cracked beads. I've seen it on occasion as well. Nothing to worry about.

And cracked beads will work just as well as whole beads. it is a homogeneous subcance, same all the way through. or so is my understanding. They just start making a mess when they turn to little pieces.

Yeah I keep mine in a big bowl with a lid and a bunch of holes in the lid and I just pour a little distilled every now and again and give it a shake to make sure they all get a little drink... I could care less if they crack my humidity is perfect and if it ain't broke I ain't fixin' it!
