I'm sure this has happened to most of you at some point or time. This is not directed at any person on this board, and in fact is the culmination of it happening over the years...the most recent time just really got under my skin

I realize that nobody likes being taken for a fool, being told they've been taken for a fool, or finding out they just spent hard earned cash on dog-shit...

But the next person who gets in my face when I kindly inform them they've purchased/been given counterfeit product is getting whatever I happen to be smoking at the time put out in their eye.

I'm doing you a service; don't act like I just crapped in your wheaties. Don't get irritated with me, don't get defensive, and don't tell me how it is and how I'm wrong. You don't have a connection or a hookup. I don't care if your relative is half cuban, and if he is half cuban then you're half moron for thinking that "too good to be true" doesn't apply to cigars.

I'm not trying to impress upon you that I have a slightly better grasp of current packaging, or dead give-aways, but you probably fell for the oldest trick in the book.

Think of this as me doing you a favor; thank me, don't yell at me. You'll probably be a little more suspicious and wiser in the future...

I can't imagine anyone getting upset with you if they were approached in the same friendly manner as this post was made. :peace:

for the past seven years it's been hushed so nobody else smoking nearby can hear, always starting out with "I hate to tell you pal, but..."

Lol, Sam, I know where you're coming from in fact there is a hilarious youtube video of some dude smoking a fake Cohiba and he gets all kinds of pissed off when the people leaving feed back tell him so. It's classic, wish I could remember the link.

Hell I'd be glad you told me... A few years ago a buddy of mine paid a decent chunck of change for some supposed aniversary cohiba's of some sort. When he came over with them they were barber poles... :hammersma I felt bad telling him, but I couldn't let him go around trading them and looking bad for it.

These are people that you do not know?
And you wonder why they're PO'd at you? (especially if you actually called them "pal" :glassesgr )
Someone is there to enjoy some downtime and a smoke (and probably is enjoying it regardless if it's a fake or not) and giving them that news just ruined that experience.

I would never tell someone I'm sitting with and do not know that they've got fakes...unless they asked me my opinion. At best, I would make reference to always do some research on how to recognize a fake and how rampant the fake market is or "It could be legit, but xyz should make me a little suspicious". Let them research and find out the bad news themselves. There's no need to piss on their cheerios, lay the ground work and let them piss on their own.

I totally see where you are coming from. It is totally arse back wards that someone will get mad or take out their frustration on you. You are doing them a favor by telling them whether the stick(s) are real or fakes. You could easily say you don't know just to avoid the confrontation, but you choose to help them. They have absolutely NO reason to say anything but thank you for letting me know I wasted my money, thank you for saving me money in the future. I worked retail for around 4 yrs and was really tough dealing with the public in that way, thankless job (what job isn't though).

New Years Eve, my wife's boss' husband pulled a ziploc baggie from his bedroom and offered me a Cohiba. Through our wives' conversations, he knew I had a new time comsuming hobby and that I had expressed interest in trying a real Cohiba the next time work took me out if the country. Having just read a couple of articles on how to spot fakes, I knew from the first second that he had crap, but I refrained. The wrapper was a goldish-green color, they were dry as the Sahara, some of the the labels were on upside down, and they had a second band on them with unreadable print. The label ends didn't meet evenly and they even stuck up above the beveling on tbe torpedo cap. They were so bad, Helen Keller would have spotted 'em. He said he bought a whole box while on a cruise. So, I asked him if he had removed the labels to bring them back. He was elated that I appeared so interested and he said, " No! I just stuck them in my suitcase and flew home w/o even being checked. Can you believe that?!?" I didn't have the heart to bust this guy's balls, plus he's a cool dude, although he might still try to poke me in the eye... In his defense, he admitted that he knew very little about cigars, but he had heard Cohibas were rare, so he couldnt pass up buying a box. I didnt want to interrogate him, so I just politely told him to save his "rare" Habanos and we'd smoke what I brought. Lucky for me I'd spent the afternoon at my local B&M and had grabbed a few RyJs, Rocky P Olde World Reserves, and I took some Nica Libres out of my humi. He fell in lust with the NL and proclaimed them to be better than his Cohibas... Needless to say, we spent the evening discussing cigars, cigar storage, humidors, and "cheap," locally available alternatives to Cohibas...

I am almost certain they're not the Cohibas they're packaged as.

I have not made any effort to definitively find out, nor have I/will I tell him what I think. What would be the point?

One day soon we'll smoke them and I'm sure we'll enjoy them. Hell, I enjoy those cheapo Nicaraguan "Quorum" sticks.
