Going to Cozumel, and I can't freakin' wait. Anyone else going to be there next week?

Any advice on cigars, food, and bars are welcome. Also, I'm pretty sure we'll take the ferry across to Playa Del Carmen at least one of the days, so any advicefor the Playa area would be great too.

I can't wait for a break from this frozen wasteland...

Thanks!

Take your own cigars to Cozumel as there are tons of vendors who will try and seperate you from your wallet. If they see you walking around with a cigar in your hand or smoking one they will be on you like flies. Understand one thing while in Cozumel, use common sense when it comes to cigars. Some vendors will try and fool you by putting fake cigars in real Cuban boxes to gain your confidence,,,don't do it.

We had a blast riding scooters around the island. after you get across the middle of the island, there is a beach side bar, with great drinks and a very cool owner. Ask to see his photo album, there is are amazing pictures of about 500 kilos of cocaine that washed up on the beach in front of his bar. As for cigars, it's mexican tourist destination, so fakes are rampant, I would bring your own.

Bring your own stix. Fakes CC on the beach. I purchased a few CC at the hotel cigar shop. They were the real deal but very spendy.
Have fun

1) Don't drink the water... period.

2) If you can go see Xel Ha http://www.xelha.com/ I would highly recommend it. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The water there is so clear it is almost transparent.
+1 for xelha...We took a side trip to cuzumel from Cancun, and we did Xelha while we were in Cancun, so I had no idea where in relation to Cozumel or Playa del Carmen, it was. Awesome day we had there.

I was there about 12 years ago, I am sure a lot has changed since then. But Carlos & Charlies is always a good time. As for cigars, there was a small shop near the port where the cruise ships docked. At the time I was there, they had a good selection of CC's, not sure if shop is still there or even the reliability on the quality of what they have in stock.

Have a great time.

Spent a day with the wife on our honeymoon 23+ years ago. My only regret was skipping the lobster dinner to eat on the ship (and we ended up being too late). Other than that, I don't really remember anything besides snorkeling.

Have a great time (I'm sure you will).

One of my buddies splits his time between his business in Dallas and his place (I should say compound!) in Cozumel. I was able to meet up with him for a day on my last cruise there. He took me to some great local watering holes (NOT the tourist traps). I highly recommend these:

Kelley's Sports Bar & Grill (Bostonian ex-pat owns it)
http://www.islacozumel.net/food/kelleys/

El Fish, it's a cantina - FREE food/appetizers and CHEAP beer, like $1!!
no website, I think it's at the corner of calle 8 and avenida 10

Here's some info to help describe it, copied from (http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g150809-i66-k1846700-Are_there_any_Gentlemens_Clubs_in_Cozumel-Cozumel_Yucatan_Peninsula.html)"

"AND someone should have mentioned that the cantinas usually are closed by around 5-6pm (they open at around noon). The food is free with each round of drinks and you get many plates of finger food with each new round. There is no "ordering". Depending on the cantina, you can eat pretty darn well.....they usually start small and work up to better and better food even whole fried fish!! BUT beware that the BEST food is often gone by the later hours and once they are out of something, that's it. Also since the beers are cheap and the food is free, make sure you leave a really good tip-----even the poorest locals who frequent the cantinas for their afternoon meal leave 20%.

Two other good ones are El Fish on the corner of calle 8 and avenida 10 (one of my favorites--no entertainment)......and Miguelitos which is on the calle that is across the street from the old Ace Hardware on 30th....changed management recently but it used to have live dancers and music---it's a giant hall and used to be PACKED every afternoon....."

Yep, definitely bringing my own cigars too. In fact my 18ct is full and ready for the trip...first thing I "packed". :glassesgr

The weather is looking less than "ideal" for doing my best beached-whale impersonation, so we might have to get creative with the plans and try and do/see more off the resort! Xel-Ha is most likely going to be one of those things, thanks for the tip.

Any Playa Del Carmen or Cancun tips since we will most definitely be ferrying across?

Thanks all for the well wishes and info!

Cancun proper is better at night, but there are cool manngrove jet ski tours to take during the day. Not really a jet ski, but a single man outboard boat thingy..pretty fun. I would think you can forgo diving or snorkling in Cancun. Cozumel is generally considered better diving. If you are in Cancun at night, hit up Coco Bongo, bitchen night club...HUGE.
