Before we start calculating profits, you need to understand risks. Almost all start up bussinesses fail withing five years and there is no way for anyone to figure out if they have the next pet rock craze that will make them millions or will just blow their life savings for nothing but agrivation. If it were easy and witout risk, evenone would do it.
Exactly! Sure, Tatuaje is a success story and I hope Pete is doing well because of it, but there have been a lot of cigar companies that didn't make it.

You do NOT go into business to get rich...it happens (every once in a while) but not very often...it is more the exception then the rule...

I have never had a real job, I have had my own business since I was 16 years old, and while I will never be rich (money wise), I make a damn good living, and there is something liberating know that **I** decide if I eat or not, and noone else...

Having said all of that, expenses for MY business are insane, and it is just me and the wife doing that....I can only imagine the expenses of a business that employs a bunch of people, AND is located in another country...

This actually turned out to be a very inspirational thread. A lot of great things said and experiences shared. Well done brothers.

Okay I'm off to Nica tonight to make more cigars.

Labor is dirt cheap where these cigars are grown. No Soc. Sec. to pay. No workers comp. No health ins. No minimum wages I would guess. But the producers are the ones taking all the risk. Damn, in some of these countrys who knows when someone might take over everything. I beleive that the bottom line is "what you put into something is what you get out" meaning hard work and a willingness to take those risk is paramount to success. Heck everything I just wrote I probably really know nothing about. Just my .02. Peace to all.

Think about how much pete travels, it seems like he is flying somewhere every other day. I wonder what his travel expenses total for a year. I bet its ridiculous...

130 total flights, 237,000 miles flown. Get upgrades now which is cool. People always cut in front of me in line thinking I'm not in first. I guess it's the way I look.

237,000 miles! Impressive sir. That's like flying around the earth 30 times. I hope to do 1/30 of that.

It's not the way you look, some people are just aholes.

I hear that man. I own my own business but keep my 3/4 sleeves covered until the contract is signed and I get a deposit, then it's on.

There was a great article on CA a while back about a guy who made his own cigars. He grew, harvasted, dried, cured, payed for a roller, boxed.. By the end of it he said there is no such thing as an expensive cigar. I'll look for link, it was a pretty cool story.

Here's the link...

Just came across this thread. That guys story is incredible! Has anyone else tried growing and rolling cigars in the states since this article? Looks like it came out in April/May 01.
