Oliva series G and V...is it just me?

I cant seem to have a good experience with Oliva brand cigars
And after all the great things I hear about them from everyday smokers and the magazine rankings, I feel almost sacrilege saying that..

Two weeks ago I had a series V and last night I had a series G
(both Maduro wrappers and Robusto size)

I found both of them to be well constructed but taste was very “Blah” to me.
The prelight draws tasted like cheap Beechnut brand chewing tobacco , and overall the cigars seemed way too earthy and even grassy at times for me
And pretty much same earthy flavor throughout the cigar. I could not notice any changes
Was not exciting at all other then the rush from the High Nic content

Maybe they needed some ageing?
But they were so bland to me, I don’t even want to buy again to store away
I

I have even tried paring with single malt scotch and good coffee, but I just cant enjoy these babies..
I also had after a good dinner with my belly full of pasta


It is just me? Or does anyone else care less about the Olivia series V and G’s ?

Oliva V has always been a great smoke for me. Are you sure that you had the Oliva V maduro? They only come in boxes of 10 and are a special addition cigar. The regular V is sun grown rapper.

The G is a good stick for me also.

There are certainly better cigars IMO. But, for the price, the G's are hard to beat and all the V's are a special treat for me. I do not care for the Serie O.

Store them for a while, your tastes might change over time.

I am quite fond of the Oliva V. It could just be your taste preference?? I sure like earthy, spicy cigars.

Buy one, age it, and try it again to see how you like it. If not, there's plenty of other cigars around :cjump:

I am not a huge fan of the G maduro. If I smoke a G, I want the cameroon wrapper.

Yeah, I also love the new especial 2009 series V that come in a ten pack. I've smoked 2 and got more on the way.

I'm not as big on the G maduro. I love the G natural.

What sizes were you smoking? My fav. for the G is the torpedo. Beautiful box press. I like the V, and the V maduro is even better.

I'm not sure why you had a bad experience. I'm assuming your Rh is on target. Maybe let some sit.... Of course, they may just not be for you.

Don't worry about it. Smoke what you like. If you don't like them, no one else can tell you that you should. Also, tastes can change over time. I used to like AF Hemingways, but now, not so much. I used to hate Padron, but now it's my favorite cigar. Try again in a year or so and you may change your mind. I've personally never had to age either of those cigars. I like both the V and the G. Cameroon G more so than the maduro.

I do agree with your tastes changing.. the gars i used to smoke years back are no loner in my rotation.

When I first started getting back into cigars about 2 years ago, "earthy" flavor profiles tasted boring and in my mind "earthy" was an advertiser's way of saying it tasted like cow pies.

Now, I often love a spicy, earthy cigar--I love Tats, other Pepin's, Padrons, and I really like the Oliva V as well. I'm not sure if the issue is that my palate has "grown" i.e. expanded in what it can enjoy, or if my tastes have just changed. I still really like a lot of the sticks that I first enjoyed, though.

One idea is for you to try the Oliva G Cameroon, i.e. natural wrapper. It's a VERY different smoke than the madro. I like both, but smoke the Cameroon more often, especially the robusto and "Special G."

But hey, if you don't like Oliva, don't bother! Plenty of other great brands to try. In a year you might come back to revisit them and find you appreciate them more ... if not, no big loss! There are plenty of smokes that others think are awesome that I just shrug my shoulders at.

Excellant suggestion Nate, I for one believe that the Serie G Cameroon is definately one of the better cameroon's on the market, especially at their price point.

Is it possible BB that you ate or drank something different prior to smoking either cigars, that could have provided you with the tastes and flavors you got.

I love the V both regular and Maduro
Also enjoy the serie O regular and maduro.

I am with the OP. I did not like the Oliva V and really did not like the V Maduro from 2008, gave most of them away....Though I cannot pin down as to why, just that I was very dissapointed....

There is no such thing as a V Maduro Robusto. They only come in torpedo, so you are probably seeing the reviews for those. They are pretty highly rated.

I think the V is just an ok cigar, and the V maduro is good. I'm not too big a fan of the G maduro, but I think that the G cameroon is a great buy for the money.

I haven't tried either series yet, but Serie O is a fine one. Had one not too long ago and enjoyed it.
