I recently got a hold of thin sheets of cedar (Thanks again Shuckins) to line the inside of a bunch of fido jars that I store some overflow cigars in. I soaked the cedar in distilled water overnight then cut and wrapped the pliable pieces around the outside of a jar and bound it tight. I placed the jar in the boiler room so the cedar could dry out completely while retaining the general shape of the jars.

Once dried I lined the inside of each jar, I have 12 of them with between 12 and 20 cigars in each, then placed the cigars back into the jars with Boveda packs some 65 some 69 depending on the cigars.

So here's what happened. I had just walked out the door when I got an inkling that maybe a ride home from work cigar was in order for today so I went back into the house where I was greeted by a horrifying site. No it wasn't my wife, it was beads of moisture on some of my cigars! I'm not sure what happened but either the cedar hadn't dried out enough or it had dried out too much and as the Boveda packs did their job the cigars absorbed the moisture faster than the cedar. Either way I managed to save the majority of them losing only 6 that I still might be able to salvage with some work. Of course the cigars most affected were the CCs I keep at 65, a RASS looked like it just finished running a marathon there were so many beads of moisture on it.

Oh well, live and learn. I do consider myself very lucky that I went back into the house, I can't imagine how bad it might have become if I let it go even for another day.

Hard way to learn it's time to buy a cooler, sorry for the loss but at least you didn't lose more than 6... My guess though would be that the others are probably not good they just weren't water logged yet, I would dry box for a long time with a hygrometer in there just to track.

Wow! Good thing the urge to smoke made you go back in the house!

Actually I haven't had a problem with jars, I've used them for a year with no trouble at all until I got the bright idea of introducing the cedar. I think they're OK for the most part, it was the non cello'ed sticks that I usually keep at a lower RH that reacted badly. The cello actually took the brunt of it on the others. I removed the cello on those and threw some beads in the jars after I removed the cedar to try to stabilize them. There are some that I will definitely have to dry box and a few that will need some minor repair.

Thanks for the input .

I'll take a crack at what happened. Condensation occurred on the outside of the sticks from what you say.

Was the cedar warm when placed in the jar? Cigars were cool (room temp). Beads placed inside jars with warm (relatively) cedar and smokes and closed up. Temp spiked, then slowly fell, causing humidity to rise fast until condensation formed on the surface of the sticks, which were cooler than the cedar.

Or am I all wet..:eyebrow:

Yes, warm. I'm thinking somewhere along the same line, not beads though but I'm pretty sure the Boveda packs would do the same. They're passive as well. I checked all of the jars again and I'm fairly certain I'm OK. I dry boxed the CC's as Terran suggested and even the RASS is looking better. Ugly as they may end up they're still doomed to a death by fire!
