Hi,

About 2 weeks ago i bought my first cooler. I feel that I have too many loose
sticks to turn it longways into a coolidor so at the moment i'm just storing my
cigars in the cooler. I have so many (boxes included) that I had to buy a second one.

So far i have 1lb of beads ina plastic bag in a tupperware container, but i feel that this isn't doing the job properly because my hygrometer is reading 40%.

A lot of the loose sticks i have in ziplock bags, and the boxes i took the tops off of most of them. I know that the hygrometer should read somewhere between 65% - 70%.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I would put the beads in an open top tupperware, and get some empty cigar boxes to put all your singles in. That way things can breath with out all that plastic. Just a thought

when you say open top, you mean tupperware container w/ the top off correct?

Thanks for the input!

yep, that is what he is talking about. You have Way too much plastic in there and not enough cedar. The beads will only regulate the Rh, and right now with only lb and not much cedar(from boxes) it can't keep up. I had the same setup, but I also used an oasis.

Also, where is your hygro in that pic/ I hope not that metal, dial type on. Dude, those are highly inaccurate. Get a digital one from Wal-Mart, salt calibrate it, and you should be on your way. Also, put some distilled water in an open container to get extra humidity in the air.

Yea I just use old boxes to store my singles in. It took me a while to get the cigars in everything in place but it works good.

If you don't want to worry about the beads getting knocked out of the tupperware you could always buy a pair of cheap womens nylon stockings. Drop the beads into one tie up the end and you have an instant bead holder.

E you're going to need to go to your local and get some boxes and size up your cigars. Get a digital hygrometer and make sure you know it's +/- reading. Then I took those ziplock containers with the lids and drilled holes in the lid and put my beads in that and this way if it were to tip it's covered. With your beads in a bag you are not getting enough humidity out of that bag and by just tossing all your gars in bags in there they are not really in a humid enviornment... My suggestion would be to get this done ASAP before your cigars start burning poorly.

Pick up some of those 9 dollar trays from Ron, that way you can stack things up, get rid of the bags, and put some cedar in that cooler all at once... the cedar will help humidity and if there is some symmetry, the humidity will be more even trough the entire space... easier airflow.
then you could put the beads in a container that breathes... and maybe one of the Oust fans (no scent for reasons that are obvious)

Excel,

At my Wal-Mart, they were in the Home & Garden Section. It was where they kept the outdoor/indoor thermometers. They had two kinds at my Wal-Mart. One was a bigger, black one, while the other was a smaller white one. I got some of the black ones, and a couple were off by like 7-9%.

Is it a cooler or a storage bin in your picture? My cooler has a lid that nests into the base, you picture doesn't look like it does. When I open or close the lid of my cooler, it makes a big "whoosh" sound.

If it's a cooler, great. If not, a storage bin would not seal and hold humidity like a cooler.

it is recommended... that is why I recommended it...

there are OUST fans that run off of batteries at intervals... as long as the air inside moves around once in a bit... you are good as it moves the humid air around, and the moisture from the beads as well.

I have a few overflowing coolers - I simply put my beads in unscented panty hose & tie the ends off, all sticks are stored in boxes (many are mixed) and use spare cedar from boxes to fill in gaps - I have a hygrometer in each to monitor things that reads mid-sixties year-round.

I also keep them in the coolest room in the house (it boarders a beverage center and is partially cooled by the cold storage next door). Never rising above 75 on the hottest days of summer & stays comfortably in the sixties during the winter.
