I am going to let you all in on a secret...working on a theory about 4th hand smoking. Basically it is just first hand smoking...but plus 3 (aka herf)! I am pretty sure I could write a book and make a couple million dollars on how once you have had first hand smoke and polluted yourself, second hand smoke (polluted all that dont smoke), and third hand smoke (polluting the walls, carpet, and lamp)...4th hand smoke with others, makes it all okay again. I think I am on to something!

I am with you...this is just too much! Too much money spent on the fact that people will still smoke even after their fancy studies...

Regardless, this kind of crap is funded by the federal government. The federal government doesn't give a damn about us. They just create this s**t for new taxes.

This basically just means you should smoke outside, then change your clothes and wash up to get rid of the residue. I do this already.

There are a couple problems with this study scientifically:

1). These people just adde a ton of nitrus acid to the air artificially, not in a "real life" setting. If you smoke in a place with non-venting gas appliances, it might matter--buy how many of us do that?

2). This study was only done with cigarettes, not cigars or pipes. This in no way proves that Nicotine might be toxic, as any number of the added chemicals in cigarettes could be needed catalysts to the chemical reaction to nitrus acid that these guys " found".

3) Both the levels of cigarette smoke and nitrus acid needed for this reaction are unlikely to coexist in most homes anyway. And as previously stated, smoking outside solves the problem combined with changing clothes and washing up.

4). The fact that they persist in declaring categorically that this is "worse for infants and young children" and that "smoking outside won't help" ( which I already showed to be rediculous) sheds serious doubt not only on the scientific integrity of the study itself, but on the pre-existing beliefs and motives (I.e. Who paid for this study").

5). If enough nitrus acid exists in your home to make this an issue, you have oter problems.

Smoking Tobacco has been a ritual or past time of humanity for a 1000 years (OK, I'm not exactly sure how long, but a helluva a long time, anyway), and it's the holy grail for these nimrods to kill it. How did we end up with this godforsaken nanny state crap? :argh:

sooo, where does the HNO2 come from? :squinteye
I have neither engines nor "unvented gas appliances" in my livingroom...
Having gas stoves etc. in an enclosed room may not be the smartest move in the first place...

When is this s**t gonna stop?
When they cure cancer.

What pisses me off about these articles is the sensationalist bullshit. I actually think it's good we know that carcinogenic chemicals are produced in this way. I don't mind that my taxes are paying for this research. What pisses me off is that no one *ever* talks about a real world relative risk level. Give me an idea of what sort of risk I'm taking. Closer to BBQ, or closer to coal mining?

We all know this hobby is dangerous. We also know we'd be safest if we stayed under our beds all day with our crash helmets on. Give us some friggin' information we can use to make our own decisions here!

Makes me feel like some kind of hi-way-man - I'm a rebel - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and flaming 5th hand smoke for me - high wide and handsome on the smokey road to oblivion. Yeah - I can see it all now - progressive prohibition all over again - there'll be bathtub stogies, Smokeeasys (tm), cigar boats bringing in contraband from off-shore - think I'll polish up the ol' Mercs and prep the hull for me new business ~:0)

You laugh, dude, but we already have bars in NYC that have wink and nod smoking arrangements under th ban. Too bad they're only for cigarette smokers.

Also we don't call them smokeeasys, but now I think I'm going to start.
