I'm pretty sure the hard drive on our dell is toast. Once again I didn't back it up.(had a 1 year dell online data back up but after the 1st year they wanted money. How dare them).
Question:
Has anyone had to do it before. And where did you send the drive?
(The only thing I wan't off the drive is all our vacation pics and I tunes.)
Any takers?

i found a few places online... i can't remember who i ended up using... it was expensive and they couldn't guarantee recovery of anything before trying. i also had to buy a new drive from them which they sent back to me. i got all my important stuff so i was happy.
just google something like hard drive recovery and scour the links till you find a company you like.
hope it works out for you.

It is completely dead and the BIOS won't see it?

There is a trick where you put the drive in the freezer over night. Plug it back in and get your data off before it dies. Some people claim this works anyway.

When all is said and done, I'd highly recommend BackBlaze for backups going forward.
It's $5 a month, unlimited storage and it automatically backups up your machine over the web. So I have something like 40 gig of pictures, 80 gig's of music, 40 gigs of applications, legal documents...etc...all backed up. I also back it up to an external hard drive, but that wont help if the house burns down or it gets struck by lightening (again).
