Hey guys,

I have been gifted a handmade humidor. It is made of %100 spanish cedar (well, according to the guy who made it at least). The humi has no finishing ie veneers, paint, polish etc and like it that way, very rustic looking.

I have one concern with it though. The smell of cedar is over whelming, smells like orange peal and zest. what do you guys think ? Is it safe to store my cigars for the short term there ? ie 1-3 months ? or even better; is there a way of getting rid of the smell full stop ?

Might be aromatic cedar (not good for cigars)

You should be sure it's Spanish cedar before use.

I'm just guessing, but if it is Spanish Cedar, the overwhelming smell might be because it's unfinished
At the box factory, there is tons of cedar being cut up, and the smell is not that strong... It smells cedary, but not overwhelmingly.

If it's brand new and freshly cut that's why it smells so strong. It'll die down soon enough.

Get some opinions in person. Some Spanish cedar just smells more than others--the Tat Brown label boxes smell a lot more than their Red label boxes, for example, and I love it.

Thank you gents for the help. I have left the humidor open for a couple of days and the smell is actually starting to disappear. :stretchgr

Yeah that has the color and grain that looks like Spanish Cedar. I think your fine and the issue might be that it is raw wood and has not been sealed on the outside. I would say you will be fine after letting it air out for a while. How old of a unit is it?

It's a week old at best. So I am assuming that the wood is very fresh. How long do you recommend me leaving it "to air" for ?

Just let that cedar 'rest' for a while, it needs for some of the fresh cedar oil to evaporate.

Once you start humidifying it, you will get another burst of cedar odor, but it will settle down over the months and years.

I its currently setting the living room and the zesty smell; although subdued now; was/is actually nice. The Mrs keep saying that we don't need scented candles for the time being :agreeclen
