Here's the deal: I'm temporarily keeping all my sticks (about 150) in two tupperdors 'cuz my good humi is still in shipping back from the sandbox. I'm starting to get wrappers splitting on me from things being too wet with only one humicare pack in each one. We're staying at 72-73 % based on my one digital hygro, which is going between the two every other day. My idea is to take off the tops and just let them breathe. Question is....how long to leave the tops off. About three weeks before my 200 count is ready to go. Thanks.

Take out the humi-care pack and add back in if needed in a couple days. 72-73 won't hurt you, but splitting wrappers isn't good. Make sure your hygro is calibrated too. You'll be out of that tupperware soon.

Are the wrappers splitting when smoked or in the humi?

I had sort of the same issue with my jarmidor. I had a 70% gel stick in there and once it started getting filled with sticks (funny how that happens around here :scratchhe) I started having an issue with higher humidity. I'd take out the gel and it'd stay pretty steady around 67%.

take out the packs. just let the cigars humidity drop slowly on thier own. no need to leave the tops off. just normal opening and closong will let them dry out very slowly

Yep...if you take the top off, you risk a more rapid decrease in humidity which may cause your cigars to split even more....

Actually they won't split from drying, they will split as humidity is added back into them if they are allowed to get too dry.
The filler takes humidity faster than the wrapper, and the filler expanding causes the cracking.

Thanks for the input guys. They are splitting when smoked, though not all of them. I'll try taking out the packs for a while, and I checked my calibration last night/this morning. The hygro reads 71 after 8 hours in the salt bag, just like it did before. Thanks again.

I was using 72% Bovedas in a cigar jar and also had problems with wrappers splitting when I smoked. I switched to 65% Bovedas and that solved the problem. Good luck!

were all these smokes recently shipped from the sandbox back here? If so, my guess is that your sticks werte a bit drier there than you thought, and now that they are back in a more humid environment, they are rapidly absorbing humidity. So when you smoke them, the moisture heats and swells....crack goes the wrapper.

I have two RubberMaids that have a 150 capacity of storage and have used these for a couple of years. I keep beads in them and a couple of sheets of cedar and have never had an negative issues doing it this way. I like this arrangement as I put all of my single sticks and 5 paks in there and it gets fresh air a couple of times a day and the hygrometer is pegged at 68%. Beads, beads, beads and cedar sheets make this as good as any humidor out there.
