If your looking for a 1911 on a budget check out the Rock Island 1911's. Great shooters that are priced right and come with a lifetime warranty.

PS: Here is the best price on these models of Rock Island 1911's. Click on May's gun page and shotgun news add

PS: You can't go wrong with the Springer 1911's either:peace:
if you're looking to carry a 1911 none of these are good choices outa the box. they all need tweaking. I like da/sa guns, I really like sigs, however the transition from da to sa can cause your follow up shot to be off.

just go shoot the guns you like, see what works best for you and buy that.

My wife did her USAF M9 certification training today. Just your standard Beretta 9mm. She missed "Expert" by 3 shots and was super pissed, lol. But she has a sprained wrist so that's a pretty good excuse. She wanted that medal, though :) Oh well, it was literally her first time every shooting a firearm, so I think she did great!

I have a RI compact tactical and feel that it is a very good gun out of the box and for the price. You may want a trigger job down the road, but the trigger out of the box is alot better than other pistols. It's also accurate and hasn't failed at the range yet. Not even during it's break in period.

The reason why I recomend these was because in his original post he stated he is looking for a pistol on a BUDGET. I do not classify SIG'S as BUDGET guns.

i was looking for a 1911 as a carry gun but after talking to people who know their 1911's far better then I do I was convinced that a factory 1911 isn't a gun that one should consider for self defense. now after some work, giddy up. It's hard to beat striker fired pistols. xd, glock, m&p, walther pps, all good guns to look at.

I'm not sure what type of work those guys that know 1911's are talking about?

Here is a review for you and anyone else interested to check out:
http://ezine.m1911.org/RIATactical.htm

Per Jeff Cooper 1911 guru. The 2 essential things that you need on a 1911 is a good crisp trigger and a set of high visibility sights. Beyond those the other desirable, but not necessary modifications are: speed safety, throating job, flared magazine well, roughened frontstap and an enlarged ejection port.

With the RI Tactical you are getting a 1911 already with:

Good trigger
Good set of high visibility sights
Beveled mag well
Flared ejection port

My RI feeds fine, so I don't see any reason to have a throat job done. Extended safety seems fine to me and I like the smooth frontstrap.

For $405.99 IMO you can't find a better brand new pistol with the same warranty and top notch customer service.

The XD, Glock, M&P, and PPS are all fine pistols as well. I guess, I'm just partial to 1911's:starrylov

As you posted earlier. Shoot the guns you are interested in and pick the one you like the best is great advice:wink:

Hot Sauce, I agree that the SIGs are not typically considered budget guns, but you can find a factory refurb at a great price. They also have full factory warranties. I found my two-tone P226 with no holster wear, in FANTASTIC shape and finish for only $425. Deals can be found, especially with the market flooded with them now. The 1911 is a great pistol too, I just have to back my beloved SIG!!! Swamp, as a few have already said, just rent a few to see what feels good...you'll know the right one after a few rounds! With some searching, you'll be able to find a great deal with whatever you decide on. Good luck, and enjoy the search and sample experience.

well i havent made it to the range yet, to try things out. but i did remember ive got a 410 ( and maybe a 12 ga i can trade in to help off set the price. i dont use em so i dont see the point of just lettin em sit in the safe... pretty much narrowed it down to a used Sig, a STI spartan, and the FNP 40 or 9

If you're looking at FN pistols they're FINE pistols. If you're looking in the $500 +/- range then I suggest the FNs you mentioned, Glocks, XDs, and possibly the walther polymer (forget the model at the moment).

I own a glock 23 which is a .40SW. I'm no pro but as long as you carry good bullets in the gun you'll be good with something down to a 9mm as long as you shoot well.

Here are a couple links to check out. Going on typical net forums will get you "buy a .45 all day long". I'm not saying the big bullets are bad just saying that you don't need it. I bought a .40 not because of wanting a bigger bullet but just because I wanted to as I shot M9s while in the military. I have not had a desire to go bigger since purchasing it. In fact the second pistol I bought after it was a 9mm.

Also if you're looking for affordable and reliable do not over look compact revolvers chambered for .38 they're stupid simple guns.

Anyway here's a couple good links. One is a list of affordable guns, one is a list of semi-auto pistols, and another is a breakdown of personal defense ammo.

went to the gunshop.. handled a FNP USG, loved the way it felt in the hand... also lucked out when i found out they had FNP 9 to rent. rented that and a Springfield XD9. i wanted to see what all the buzz was about with the XD.... i now know. both shot well, smooth trigger pull, and nice groupings. 50 bucks later i am still leaning toward the FNP...
