I had a cigar filled day yesterday and was wondering what your thoughts were on the following:

How long between cigars do you think it takes for your mouth to recover after smoking a cigar? Do you feel after you have smoked a cigar, you can't pick up the subtle flavors of the next one? Are there any tricks to speed up the recovery process of your mouth?

I ask because I smoked a few cigars during the day while golfing yesterday, and one while doing yard work and had plans to go out at night to smoke with a friend. We were going to smoke the two Skull and Bones I got my hands on, but I was kind of concerned it would be a waste due to the fact I had already smoked three cigars.

I have found brushing my teeth/tounge works well for me, also a citrus drink such as lemonade seems to clear my buds...I've indeed found the same thing with multiple cigars and dark beers during long days of fishing, everything just starts to taste like burning.. LOL

After 5 or 6 nothing is really going to clear it up, your tongue is so fried that everything tastes like ash. That my problem at herfs, mentally i save the best for last, but after 7 smokes the 8th one isn't gunna taste much different. So now I start with the best and finnish with the good

Really neat thread, as I have often pondered this!
In a fancy restaraunt, you are given sorbet to cleanse the palate between courses.
Considering that a cigar is all about discerning subtle and often complex flavors, my opinionis that the first cigar would absolutely affect the next one(s) to follow.
For this reason I never write a review on a second or third cigar, nor try a new cigar after smoking.

Yep, I went to a big herf last month and smoked 9 cigars in one day - the last one was an illusione mk from 2007. I didn't want to put it down but couldn't finish it because every puff just burnt my tongue!

As a rule of thumb, if I'm going to smoke a cigar I want to be memorable I try to make it my first cigar of the day. The exception is a herf situation like above, once a year get together with friends - started with an OpusX BBMF maduro and kept rocking it from there.

When I review cigars, I NEVER review more then one at a time, for this very reason...although I will sometimes smoke one after another, if I have more then one cigar of what I am reviewing, so that I can tell if there is consistency in the flavors...

I can't trust that I am tasting everything I should be, even after one cigar...

When I go to herfs or gtg, I usually smoke fairly small cigars, as they last a shorter time....

my rule is no more than 3 back to back...i down a bottle of water after each, wait about 30 minutes, and for me...im good for another one. and i usually try to stagger my smokes but strength. start out light, and smoke my full bodied sticks later. great conversation piece, thanks for posting! :)

Funny you say that Larry, I am sipping on some Arizone Ice tea and smoking an Epernay and I am noticing the flavors have a bit more pop to them.

I may be wrong, but I think Larry is saying that the tea cleanses the palate, not accentuates the flavors.

Although I guess it could do both...

Larry?! :)

Larry...Not to "hijack the thread", but I'd love to hear more about those Origen Originales by J Fuego.

The idea is absolutely intriguing!! I ordered a sampler of them, and I just can't wait to get them...Anyway, I PM'd you.

(Sorry, guys..)

Well whatever the tea may have done, I can say for sure that compared to the one I smoked yesterday with a glass of ice water, I def feel I picked up more of the flavors while drinking ice tea with this one. That I can't deny.

Certain toothpastes can actually taint your tastebuds.

Water is the best to cleanse your palate, as is a lemon sorbet. I try and take breaks between cigars so not to burn my tastebuds out.

Water has worked for me, but I am a tea nut (iced) and usally always have a glass of it with a smoke.

The only time is in the mornings watching the sun come up and then it is usally 2 or 3 cups of coffee.

Clint, you and I do the same thing. Never rate a new cigar unless its the first one of the day.
