Not really harsh. People ignore those debts at their peril. I went to jail once when I was young for 30 days to pay off a fine I didn't have enough money for...

Cop with a law degree. I dont like this. Granted this is generally the sheriffs domain, but the populous is footing the bill for this. In the incident listed the cost of the event would have been 3 to 4x the 250 debt. Waying in deputy pay, use of dept resources, processing, jail facility. Only skimmed the article, but seems a bad idea in times where agencies are cutting staffing. Unless the creditors are paying the cost, yeah right.

I pay my debts and think everyone should as well, but there is an existing system in place of judgements.

She wasn't thrown in jail for failing to pay a debt, she was arrested for skipping a court hearing. The fact that it was about a debt is secondary.

You will not get thrown in jail for owing money.
If you get sued over debt and choose to ignore the court dates, that's a whole different monster.
