My daughter is worried about the ill effects of cigar smoking on her dad. When I told here I do not inhale she sent me to the following website: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Tobacco/cigars

I know in the past there have been numerous posts here detailing the mis-information the goverment has put out concerning the dangers of cigar smoking.

Please help me find some info that I can show her that disproves these misconceptions and out right lies.

Thanks for your hellp.

From the link:

Are cigars addictive?

Yes. Even if the smoke is not inhaled, high levels of nicotine (the chemical that causes addiction) can be absorbed into the body. A single cigar potentially can provide as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes (1).

A cigar smoker can get nicotine by two routes: By inhalation into the lungs and by absorption through the lining of the mouth. Either way, the nicotine that gets into the body is addictive.
This is the biggest load of horseSh*t I have ever read.

My family doctor says he would much rather I smoke a pipe or cigars as opposed to cigarettes. Everything in the world is bad for you. The state of california reconizes everything as a carcinogen. so Enjoy life.

I, as a young guy, worried too.. When I asked my doctor he said he smokes a couple a week on the golf course, he said my dentist might not be as happy though.

I completely agree. Give me some data or articles to back it up.
Well, I don't need an article to back up that specific claim (that cigars are more addictive then cigs)...I live it every day...I can (and have) gone weeks without smoking a cigar, and have absolutely no problems whatsoever doing so...try having a cig smoker do the same :)

I would tell her (in regards to that specific article) that the government ALWAYS has an ulterior motive, and that she should not believe everything she reads (ESP from them)...

Cigars are more addictive than cigarettes. And you ALL are case studies that prove this. I have never seen a cigarrette smoker buy cigarettes they plan on smoking 5 years from now. Or have enough cigarettes to say man I am short on money right now, maybe I shoule sell those Camel Wides I bought 5 years back. You guys are addicted and are sic. I can help you break this addiction. Just send me all your cigars and cut up your credit cards... problem solved. Just here to help.

Well i used to smoke both cigarrettes and cigars. a month a go i went to the doctor cause i kept getting short of breath in the evenings. turns out the cigarrette smoke was causing acute bronchitus, so i had to stop smoking everything. i had cigarette cravings like you wouldn't believe but no cravings for a cigar. Now smoking cigars and not health problems, but still get that cigarette cravings. so no way cigars are as addicting as cigarettes.

But remeber the government has hit this new generation with antismoking propoganda since elementery school and no matter what you tell them they are going to believe that smoking is bad. and then you tell her of all the published health studies that said hot dogs gave us cancer and how cell phones cause cancer, and that eating red meat well done leads to breast cancer in women. and eggs will cause you todrop dead of a heart attack due to cholesterol. it's all govt propoganda in order to tax or regulate a product/industry

If you look at the all mortality table for a 1-2 cigar a day smoker - non inhaler - the avg mortality rate is 1.02 as opposed to the non-smoker at 1.0 - in other words very little increase in mortality and more or less in line with what I would expect to see. I don't think any of us are naive enough to think that it has no effect on our health. Overall risk is very low and you'll more than likely die from something non-smoking related before you die from smoking cigars.

Yep, me being fat (according to the government's charts, I am dead already) will kill me LOOOOOOOOOOONG before the cigars I smoke do...
