From a NY B&M Owner. If Patterson and the NY Senate have their way, this IMHO will be the first of many to exit the state. What they did/do for the troops is world class. They have sent care packages to my sons in Afghanistan and Iraq!

Damned shame.

Dear Friends - In 1996 I had a vision to open a premium neighborhood cigar store where those who shared my love of fine tobacco would have the opportunity to purchase their favorite cigars, lovingly kept in their perfect environment. Within 2 years I outgrew my humble shop, and I opened a spacious lounge, where you were welcome to unwind in a comfortable and friendly setting. For fourteen years you have graciously helped Uptown Cigar Company become not only a local favorite, but a widely known and respected purveyor of the finest premium cigars and tobaccos. We have made friends and customers across the globe, including our bravest military personnel.

Unfortunately, constant tobacco legislation from my state of New York has hampered our ability to remain competitive. In 1996 the OTP tax was 20%. It increased to 37% and is now 46%. Scandalously the Governor’s budget targets this small family industry, and the tax now proposed is revised to 90%. This is likely to pass. Sadly, this has made it impossible to operate a bricks and mortar store within NY State.

Rather than close, with the help of Israel, (AKA Uptown Isy) my manager, we will be relocating our operation to Florida. So, on June 30th, we will shut our doors here in Kingston. However, as of July 1st we will launch our UPDATED state of the art, fully functional website and there will be a seamless transition. At our new facility we will offer a much broader selection of your favorite smokes at an even better price! All our orders will ship promptly via USPS priority mail to ensure quick delivery and of course the cigars will be arriving at the same high level of quality as you have come to expect from Uptown Cigar Company

On behalf of all the wonderful staff I have had the pleasure to work with over these 14 years, I thank you for your past patronage, and I look forward our on-going relationship for many years to come.

Most Sincerely,
Michelle Tuchman

It sucks that they have to move but if all o the cigar shops move out of the state, maybe they'll get the message. You only hurt small business with his kind of tax.

Unfortunately they will get the message when it's too late!

yeah it really is too bad. I'm faced with a similar circumstance here in Ontario. The taxes on cigars make it almost impossible for a b&m to exist - especially since they don't allow smoking in them anymore. The closest one to where I live is between 90mins and 2hrs away - it's an LCDH though.

Even if it were nearby, I still couldn't support it however due to the taxation. For example, a CoRo single here in Ontario will set you back anywhere between $35-$40, and a box anywhere from $750-$1k...In 3 seconds of searching online, I can have a box dropped at my doorstep for under $300. B&M's just can't compete, and as a result there are almost none left. Sad.

NY is a complete mess. I cant wait for Patterson to be out of here.
I'm sure we are going to see a lot of the shops closing. They wont stop with the taxes. I love NY but they are making it impossible to live here. Good luck in Florida.

being from NY i really hate to see this. Luckily my local already had a very lucrative online business. So they won't have to shut their doors. I was talking with the owner the other day and he is pretty certain that it will pass, but there may be a saving grace. There is also a proposal of a cap of $1 per cigar. If this happened that may actually bring pricese of higher end cigars down like your davidoffs and what not. So there may be a silver lining.

I've lost all the stores near me in upstate NY. The closest quality cigar shop is an hour drive to syracuse or 1.5 hours to corning. I really hope the cigar cap gets put in. On the other hand at least now the state government is actually addressing some financial realities. In past years the budget would contain borrowing and budgetary tricks to hide the deficit. So unpleasant as the taxes and various cuts in government services are, at least it's a step in the direction of responsible budgeting. Only a temporary step though because our governor is the one forcing the legislature to be honest about the budget and for that reason he's already been told by his own party not to bother running for reelection.

PA is next. If Florida is smart they will remain as the only state with out a cigar tax. Then again at the same time even if they did a small tax there's no where else for cigar companies to go.

I am from NY and found out about this too little too late.

I talked to my local B&M just yesterday and they said they will probably have to close up shop because they will not be able to stay afloat.
