So the wife and I saw an episode of Law and Order, where some crazy geeks were running thru a subway tunnel looking for a freakin Tupperware box with some cheesy toy in it. Then I saw a guy at work with a Geocaching sticker on his car. So now my interest was piqued, and we looked it up. The site is www.geocaching.com and is set up with FAQs a forum like this, and tens of thousands of caches located world wide. So you look up a cache nearby, and log it into you GPS and head out to find it. Once you do, you sign the log book, trade something in the box for something you brought with you and then log it on the website when you get home. Anyway, we went on our fist hunt the other day and did not find it, but there are about 100 other little Tupperware hidden with in 10 miles of our home. I did not have a GPS at that time, but am ordering one now. We looked up Google Earth and we were in the right place, but the city just mowed the tall grass so maybe it got mowed up. We will also be looking for caches when we travel. Check it out, my kids enjoyed the walk, were excited to look for it and are excited to go try to find the next treasure. Anyone else here doing this? If so share a story for us.

I did this a lot a few years back, but life has intervened... :(

One of the coolest ones I came upon was strapped under an overpass in Iowa... had about 200 rock band bumper stickers. A note in the box said "sign the log, take a sticker" I'll never forget that one.

Maybe i should try and update my GPS maps... wouldn't mind getting back into this.

Have fun!

You know, I've thought about it in the past. The other day, I got thinking about it, again, because I have the Palm phone now, with GPS. There are even a few apps that work well with geocaching for my phone.

I know, from looking in the past, there are quite a few around this area. I may have to try this out, soon!

it seems there are 6 in the park behind my house and another about a mile up the road!

would be ironic if there was a clue to the puzzle bomb and a 5er in one of them:hysterica

this seems to me like one of those things that "sounds" like it would be fun, so you do it once, run out and buy some fancy hand held gps thing then the initial excitement fizzles out after doing it 3 or 4 times.

come to think of it, seems a lot like...ahh...never mind...

We're trying to find something that is inexpensive, and active, that is also interesting for the kids. More family time away from the TV, while being active. This seems like a great hobby for us to get into. I am sure more than a few have quit after doing it for just a few months. But some of the guys on the site have over 700 finds. Kind of like the difference in cigar collections. Some are happy with 30 smokes and smoke are never happy even after thousands of cigars being stored.

you can use the gps in your phone or a car gps will work too... you don't need a hiking gps...

the phone ones are the best... we can set it to track out adventure and god forbid we get lost it can backtrack us back to start! also aslong as we have cell service we can tell it to sent updated about our location to anyone in our group or even facebook!

Went along with the kids when they were doing it, that is before they got married.

It was fun and a family thing we did. It actually lasted about 3 years for us. Now the kids are doing a little of it with the grandkids.

The kids and grandkids now use the Garmin e Trex H High Sensitivety GPS.

Okay, so I just completed my first Geocache. It was located in Cuba, near the Partagas factory....

Oops! Forgot I was supposed to replace the contents with something else!!
