I know that many of us love the PA (USA) Broadleaf that Pete and Pepin use on the Reserva line of Tats (I think it's the same as on the La Riqueza and original El Triunfador, but I could be mistaken) and are highly anticipating the 3 new so-clad cigars coming out soon.

But I'm wondering what other cigars there are that use a similar Broadleaf wrapper that you guys like.

Right now I'm smoking a Deisel, by AJ Fernandez, which uses PA Broadleaf. The pre-light smell of this stick is very similar to that on the Tats (the wrapper actually looks, smells, and feels just like the El T), and in the flavor profile you can definitely tell the rich, chocolaty character of the wrapper. (The blend falls short of Tatuaje quality, but overall it's a great full-bodied smoked for $3, imvho, especially for Broadleaf fans.)

The only other stick I know of that uses this wrapper is the new-ish 5 Vegas Triple A (also AJ Fernandez I think).

What are some of your other favorite Broadleaf-gilded cigars?

^forgot about the RP Winter Blend, I believe that used PA Broadleaf as well (and I think AJ did that one too, lol, I guess the guy likes his Broadleaf! Though I still think the Ruination is his best work so far).

Love to really pronounced chocolate this leaf gives. Haven't had any of the Tat reservas, but I've had a few of AJ's sticks that use it, and love 'em.

The PA leaf is used on the Patel brothers cigars and the John Hay cigars which I think are wonderful. If I could, I would wrap the world in broadleaf.

I think Pinar Del Rio made a PA BL stick.

Broadleaf is a darker, thicker wrapper that has a natural maduro quality to it, (but I don't think it goes through the maduro process) and is more rustic in appearance.

I was wondering if the Padron maduros use BL.

Can someone explain the difference to me? Broadleaf compared to? I just dont know the terms and what BL's entail.
Read this article... discusses how the broadleaf is cured, the difference in CT and PA broadleaf and even dying. It's from Alex Svenson who is CI's main buyer so take it for what it's worth... We met him down in Esteli when our group was there in April.

The PDR Botl is a Brazilian wrapper. If I'm not mistaken Pete uses two dif Broadleaf wrappers. The res are all Con broadleafs. And I think its still a traditional Maduro wrapper w heat applied to darken the wrapper. And sometimes ruffer in apperance. Although if I remember the La Rickys are a naturally dark Connie that is smoother. Orig El ts, Liga 9s also use Conn Broadleaf. As well as many other brands now.

Justin... the La Ricki's are broadleaf too... from New Havana's website:

Nicaraguan Binder and Filler are encased in a Dark Natural Connecticut Broadleaf Wrapper. They are traditionally box pressed in the box.

Thanks for posting that link, a very informative read.

The PDR I was thinking of is the Seleccion Reserva Limitado, which is CT Broadleaf grown in Lancaster, PA (according to NHC) which sounds like PA BL to me.

What's interesting to me is how much I've liked the PA BL, and not really cared for the CT BL - The RSW maddie being the one exception.

Broadleaf - Connecticut vs. PA Dutch:

To the best of my knowledge, Pepin uses real Connecticut Broadleaf for his B.Leaf blends. He fully ferments them in Pilones and Boxes and does not dye them in any way (Not that anybody suggested that he did).

PA Broadleaf, otherwise known as Pennsylvania Dutch is a binder/capa grade leaf that is heavily used as capa for mass market cigars, such as Backwoods and others. However, a handlful of manufacturers have been using it for premium cigars recently.

Best,
JD

Maybe I am wrong but isn't the Oliva G Maduro a broadleaf too?

I get that chocolaty taste a lot from it

Hmm, well there seems to be some confusion on CT vs. PA Broadleaf. I didn't even know there was such a thing as "Pennsylvania Broadleaf" type of tobacco, as opposed to Connecticut, I was just referring to where these leaves were grown. As far as I know, the Tats use the tobacco variety "Connecticut Broadleaf," but I know that some of the farms are NOT IN CONNECTICUT, but in PA (they were recently looking at one in MA). When asked about this, Pete just said, "Well, it's USA Broadleaf." Perhaps there is a stigma against Broadleaf not grown in CT?

As to the CT Broadleaf for Tats not actually being grown in the state of Connecticut, I'm not sure how much it matters, but it probably does. I know that a Connecticut wrapper grown in Ecuador is much different, and perhaps different farms hundreds of miles away in the US would have different leaf qualities too.

Regardless of what Pete/Pepin have done in the past, my understanding is that now all the new Broadleaf is from ONE FARM (not sure if that means that literally ALL of the Tatuaje sticks using Broadleaf--like La Riqueza, etc.--are from that one farm or not). I'm also not sure which state that farm is in, or how much it matters.
