Regardless of what Pete/Pepin have done in the past, my understanding is that now all the new Broadleaf is from ONE FARM (not sure if that means that literally ALL of the Tatuaje sticks using Broadleaf--like La Riqueza, etc.--are from that one farm or not). I'm also not sure which state that farm is in, or how much it matters.
Yeah this was discussed when we were down in Nica but I can't remember where that farm was exactly... I think it was in PA because I remember AJ (Soundwave13) saying he didn't live too far away from it. But yet, Pete & Pepin said they sourced a lot of broadleaf from one place.

Thanks for that. So here's the follow-up quesiton--do you think the Broadleaf from PA taste better than the stuff grown in CT? I've smoked plenty of Broadleaf-wrapped cigars (Rocky has been using it for years--i.e. the Vintage '90 and others), but it wasn't until the Tatuajes that I started really noticing it, and now I've found other Broadleaf wrappers that I think taste similar and great (like the Diesel).

Then again, maybe its just just the state it's grown in, as much as the specific farm even. I know that's true with wine--some specific fields just make more desirable grapes.

hmm... it would be awesome if Pete chimed in. I would love to know where the wrapper was grown, not just the type of seed. I always just assumed CT BL was grown only in CT... little did I know.

Absolutely, different soil, different weather will account for pretty dramatic changes in flavor in both wine and cigars.

As far as I know, the seed for CT and PA BL is exactly the same, simply one is grown in PA (and traditionally used for binders). The seed is descended from Cuban seed, but has morphed over a couple hundred years.

i thought pete's sticks only used CT BL.
You are correct... although not positive if any use the PA broadleaf.

Now I take my original statement back after I thought about it and posted my last comment about AJ living close to the farm. However, I can't remember if they were already sourcing a farm in PA or if Pepin was going to check out a new farm in PA... I want to say Pepin talked about going to check out a new farm in PA.

I know they just went to check out a farm in MA recently, near the boarder.

I like that people are still experimenting with tobacco. The PA Broadleaf wrappers that AJ Fernandez is using are great, the stalk-cut wrappers that JD is using are phenomenal. I hope people continue pushing the envelope.

I was under the impression that they were getting some broadleaf from PA too - the 'key' was HOW they processed the leaf. The source is supposedly in Lancaster - Amish country, which is only about an hour west of me. Not sure if they were buyin the farm or not, but they (Pete & Pepins) have been out this way 3 or 4 times since March.

I know that many of us love the PA (USA) Broadleaf that Pete and Pepin use on the Reserva line of Tats (I think it's the same as on the La Riqueza and original El Triunfador, but I could be mistaken) and are highly anticipating the 3 new so-clad cigars coming out soon.

But I'm wondering what other cigars there are that use a similar Broadleaf wrapper that you guys like.

Right now I'm smoking a Deisel, by AJ Fernandez, which uses PA Broadleaf. The pre-light smell of this stick is very similar to that on the Tats (the wrapper actually looks, smells, and feels just like the El T), and in the flavor profile you can definitely tell the rich, chocolaty character of the wrapper. (The blend falls short of Tatuaje quality, but overall it's a great full-bodied smoked for $3, imvho, especially for Broadleaf fans.)

The only other stick I know of that uses this wrapper is the new-ish 5 Vegas Triple A (also AJ Fernandez I think).

What are some of your other favorite Broadleaf-gilded cigars?
I actually use Conn. Broadleaf grown in MA......One farm, one family and one future...Exclusive with Pepin, Jaime and Me......and loving it....

Thanks for the final word, Pete!

So I guess my final theory is this: all Broadleaf is not equal. It matters where it's grown, and just as (more?) importantly how it's fermented. And I'll continue to try more BL sticks, because I'm really liking the stuff!

Yes a little on where it is grown and a lot on how it is fermented......All good broadleaf is stock cut and cured.....The key to the farm we use is the mineral content.....like fools gold on the wrapper.....

I wish that the el trifundor brand would switch back to the old broadleaf wrapper. I liked it much better than the new one. please!:argue:
The "old" BL-wrapped El Triunfador lancero STILL EXISTS! Pete has said he won't stop making them until people stop buying them!

I also love the original El Triunfador lancero, but I love the new lancero as well. Both great sticks, just very different. I can see myself smoking more of the new ones in the long run, though, as they are a pretty unique cigar. The original El T is awesome, but to my palate there are a few other cigars that it shares menu-space with (i.e. if I want that flavor profile).
