Got my tube, set my meter, put in the smokes and set it in a cool dark place, not on an outside wall.

Yesterday and today the temp read 77 & 80 respectively and the humi level was 75% and I have the 65% beads.

I am wondering if the problem is that I am using a glass container?

Today, when I opened the container and the humidity level plunged to 65% within 2 minutes. First off, the house is not 80 degrees, second of all, should I switch to plastic or leave a corner open?

I don't think I over watered the beads. I only sprayed with distilled while rotating bead-tube twice and quickly.

Do I need to change containers or just chill?

Thanks. :scratchhe

When you say you set your hygro, did you calibrate it? Like do a salt test? Also, it sounds like you did get your beads a bit wet and since there is not other wood to absorb some of the humidity it is high. You say your house is not 80 then why does it say so in the place where you store your cigars. I would also check the accuracy of the temperature. I used to keep a small humidor at my GF house and she would turn off the A/C during the day. It would get 87 or so in her apt. Sure enough that is what it said in my humidor. I never had an issue with the smokes in there.

Should be calibrated using a 75% Bovida calibration kit, the salt test has too many things that can go wrong IMO. Make sure you have more white beads than clear ones. If your humi had leaks it would have the same (or close) humidity to the room, being that yours is off but quite a bit I doubt that is the problem. As for the temperature, there is no possible way that it is any different than the room it is in. Coolers stay cooler longer (or hold heat longer) and have much slower temp swings than a room does but a regular humi changes temp pretty quickly with the room temp.

Used the 75% Bovi kit. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the glass container.

Hmmm. So, should I re-calibrate the meter or let the beads dry, or both?

A trick someone told me once was to make sure the hygro has fresh batteries. Amazing how much variance there can be if the battery is weak. Most all hygros off the shelf need a fresh battery.

Tim I have to disagree somewhat. Mist of the 20 dollar digi hygros and some of the others have the pull tab in the battery compartment to activate the battery. If you check the battery date when 1st using it. As long as it's with exp limits it should be fine. But I will say once a year they should be changed. Unless the pull tab was missing when purchased.

Go to a local B&M and pick up some pieces of cedar to throw in there. They will help regulate humidity and make your humidor smell like it should, haha

a glass jar could easily act a a greenhouse, and heat up and cause high RH readings, even with just incandescent bulbs from across the room.
