Well it's been a rough week and I just need to vent...

First, moved away from home to Minnesota to pursue my engineering degree. My family has always lived within a couple miles of each other; we are an extremely tight-knit group. I miss them very much. I also don't seem to fit in well... it appears I have different priorities from those around me.

Second, this morning I got a message from an old friend/classmate. The wife of one of my favorite high school teachers has passed away after a long battle with cancer. My heart breaks for him (kinda feminine sentence? meh whatever). He is one of the most caring human beings I have ever encountered. He is also one of the reasons I was able to love and cherish my education. He went above and beyond as a teacher.

Third, and finally, I just received a phone call saying one of my best friends has been rushed to the hospital because he couldn't breathe and other complications. We are awaiting a blood test, it is suspected that somebody may have given him a drug to induce this.

I hope you all are a having a week far better than this. And PLEASE, PLEASE... if you have family and close friends, please show them love and appreciation. You never know when God may call them home. You can never tell them enough.

Hang tough. The fact that you care about others when you're dealing with your own issue says lots about your character.... you can handle this. Things happen in threes.... you've paid your dues for awhile.

Bummer, keep your chin up.

As far as the people at school go, don't worry, half your freshman class will not be there next semester.

Sorry to hear of all the challenges for friends - relationships are what it's all about - thank God you have close ones and can share in both the tough as well as good times - continue to encourage them even with something as simple as your presence and prayers - don't let the school experience frustrate you - use it to improve what you seem have to us - good character

Just hang tough. Believe it or not there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you will find it soon.

Alex, I hope things get better for you soon. Maybe you can find some other students that like cigars -- or something else that's of interest to you. If you're in the dorms or otherwise have a lot of contact with students out of class that'll help.

Hang in there brother, You know these things happen for a reason. Sometimes there's no answer it's just a part of life and it does get rough! Sounds to me your no follower, to go against the grain can be a lonely road, also the path less traveled. Most people just like to fit in, be apart of the crowd. Keep Doing your own thing, you'll pull through I hope your friend does the same. God Bless

I am with ya. When I shipped off to boot camp a month after graduating high school, I was in the same boat. Very close family, all lived close, etc. I hated it, but at the end (4 months later) I went home only to take up all of my things and move to Florida. It's tough, but it gets better. You'll find a circle of friends, get crazy busy with school work, and it'll get more comfortable. On a college campus, you're bound to find people with whom you share common interests and priorities.

You also have BOTL!

I'm sorry about your friends, there's not really anything cliche I can say that will actually make a difference, but fwiw a room has to get messy before it gets clean.

When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. Not trying to Bible thump, but that passage encourages me a lot when I'm struggling with stuff. It's in James 1:2-3 if you're curious.

Once again, thanks for the support and encouragement guys (and gals).

My buddy is out of the hospital, and back home. I think there is still some damage to be handled, but we are all thankful he is home safe.

My family, friends, brothers here, and a cigar or two helped me out greatly this past few days
