Storing a humidor without cigars until use?

I acquired a beautiful black-cherry finish 75 ct. humidor today (for free, no less!) and don't quite have enough cigars to fill it up and my 35 ct.

Will it damage the humidor at all to store it without cigars or any beads/humidification system until I am ready to use it?

It's already seasoned, so will I need to re-season it?

I'm thinking it'll be about a week or so before I can start filling it up (once I arrive in NYC).

It won't hurt it. You may have to re-season it depending on how long you leave it without a humidification device.

OK. That's all I'm worried about - seasoning is not a problem.

I just didn't want to find out that "nope, sorry, humidor's done got broken!"

Can you (or someone) just toss a puck humidifier in there in the meantime? ....Just saves the time to re-season.

I don't have one. I'm actually waiting on one as we speak.

I only have a humidifier - one of those plastic Park Lane ones that you fill with distilled water. But I don't like how much it leaks and stains the wood.

I only have one set of beads and they're in my other (full) humidor.

I would throw in 2 boveda 65% packets (no more or less) (no higher and no lower than 65%), in the humidor. Then wrap the entire thing in a plastic wrap (Suran wrap only! Very important!). Take the wrapped humidor and place on a couple sheets of news paper and wrap it up to cover the plastic wrap. Use masking tape to secure. Then place the humidor into a tupperware filled with green styrofoam pellets. (must use green to help prevent such and such). Finally take the tupperware and throw it into a freezer set at 33 degrees. Simple as that.

Or.... You will be fine the way it is :)

Haha you're a trip man! Megladon, if you are having trouble with leaking distilled water from your humidification device into your humidor, that's an issue. It's not good for the wood to be saturated like that, and it could also harm the cigars. When you fill it up with distilled water, turn it over with a towel and just soak up the excess moisture. That should prevent leaking, and leave just the right amount of water in there.

...or you could do the bovida thing!

Regards,

-Dave

Not only does the humidor I brought to NYC seem to not have a proper seal, but I've noticed quite a large crack on the back wall of the inside.

I think I'm going to have to drop $70-$100 on a new humidor while I'm here.

I think this might be a good choice.

Thoughts?

Those aren't bad if you can get them on cbid. They're fairly thin on the cedar lining though. I have a similar one but with a glass top. I have to overcompensate with more beads. If you're interested in that one, they have one (or two) for bid on cigarbid.

I can't think of a specific one off the top of my head, but if you do a google search for 100 ct humidor, click on "shopping results" and sort price low to high you'll find quite a few for cheaper than $85. Something around $50-$60 should work just fine.
Also, many sites have "imperfects" listed for quite a discount, if you don't mind a couple really small scratches or dents.

As long as the humidity doesn't drop too low for a long time it won't matter that much.
