Mayor Michael Bloomberg is supporting a bill to ban outdoor smoking in all parks and beaches in NYC. Once again our right to make decisions as Americans is being infringed upon and the effects will snowball as we have already seen across the country. The CRA and the New York Tobacconists Association in addition to lobbying against this bill have created an online petition stating their opposition. I encourage all Brothers Of The Leaf to sign whether a New Yorker or not and save your freedoms! The petition will be sent directly to City Hall and is very simple to sign up. If all could follow the link before the City Heall meeting on October 14th that would help send a clear message to the powers that be that we are able to make out own choices. Protect our rights!

Done and done.

I'll be living in NYC. This is ridiculous.

I'm not going to go smoke in a playground, that would just be ignorant. But I should be allowed to enjoy my stogie while reading the morning paper on a park bench.

I really do think there are certain places it is rude to smoke in/around. Like my aforementioned example of a playground.

I also am not going to argue about non-smoking restaurants or sections in restaurants.

But this bill takes it too far.

I pay my damn taxes, I vote for whoever will do the least damage, and I follow the law. But I will be goddamned if someone is going to tell me I cant smoke a cigar outdoors, where no one is bothered or affected by it.

Indeed.

Particularly on your own property. That would be a huge line for them to cross. If they tried to tell me I can't smoke a cigar in my backyard, I'd tell them to go F themselves.

But I stand by my earlier statement - if you're smoking a cigar in a populated playground or next to a daycare or something, you're being a jerk.

Here's the response I got back from Dan Halloran, Council Member....

"Thank you for contacting me in opposition to Intro 332, a proposal to ban smoking in parks, beaches, marinas, boardwalks and pedestrian plazas.

I am also in strong opposition and will be voting against this proposal because it is another step towards making our city a complete nanny state. It should not be the government’s role to dictate people’s decisions regarding their health, their lives, and their liberty. Moreover, there is evidence that outdoor secondhand smoke is no more of a threat to public health than a wide variety of City air particulates, including vehicle exhaust, building heating and cooling exhaust, common construction debris and aerosol byproducts.

Again, thank you for taking the time to write to me regarding this issue. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my district office at (718) 631-6703."

In Service,

Dan Halloran
Council Member, District 19

Thank you for your email regarding the Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to ban smoking from beaches, parks, and pedestrian plazas.

In general, I support the Mayor’s efforts to reduce smoking in our city and am pleased that smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants and bars. However, as this law would apply to public outdoor areas, I am curious to learn more about how it would work logistically and how it would be enforced. I look forward to hearing from other New Yorkers and learning more during the Council’s public hearing process.

Thank you, again, for sharing your views. I appreciate your comments and will weigh your feedback as I consider this legislation moving forward.

Sincerely,

Jessica Lappin
