Heading to the SC beach herf. Is it better to put my sticks in the check in luggage or carry on as far as security is concerned?

I'm wondering about this too, but I am bringing a significantly larger amount, and I'm crossing the border from Canada to the USA.

I have my two humidors, one of them 75% full and the other empty (to be filled when I get there).

I guess with the Cubans I have, I should either not bring them, or take the bands off.

Carry on. They won't hassle you about the sticks at all, you can even carry on a cutter.
x2

Although I've heard they'll let you carry on cutters, I'm still a bit cautious about carrying an expensive cutter, just in case a TSA agent is having a crappy day.

You won't have a problem with your Cubans unless you are planning to bring a ton of them. You can legally have them, us US citizens can't. If you are bringing a reasonable amount for personal consumption (ie, not 50+) they won't say a word.

Bands off won't mean anything, the way they see it-it's your burden to prove they are NOT Cubans, not their job to prove they are.

I am bringing a total of about 25 cigars into the country, of which maybe 5-6 of them are Cubans.

So I won't have a problem?

Definitely put your cigars in the carry-on, no worries. Plus if you check them, you risk them getting stolen.

Coming into the US with cubans is more of a risk, but I have only done so a couple times. I have flown a couple times back into the country with a travel humidor and no one has ever checked them. I drove back into the US from Canada but just had a couple singles and didn't worry about it. Driving in from Canada with a couple humidors might be harder to get away with... use your own discretion.

Yeah but like I said, one of them is just an empty box.

I was even thinking of wrapping it up like a present and saying it's a jewelry box for someone.

That is wrong... no one can legally bring cuban cigars into the US. Again, use discretion.

I always travel with a 15 ct and I always check them in my bag but they wont bother you in your carry on. Just DONT take your lighter or cutter in your carry on because they will take them.

I doubt you will have any issues coming over, but going back the taxes may be a different story IF you claim them.

Yeah, I'm actually sending most of them back by mail to my brother, disguised as gifts of different kinds.

The rest will be in my humidors and not claimed.

If you wrap up the box and claim it's something that it's not and get caught, you will screw yourself and be there a long time under much more scrutiny...This is a fact!

You may NOT bring Cuban cigars into the US regardless of you nationality and regardless of how many....Take the bands off, and say all of your cigars are not Cuban...Why? Because there is no way that a customs agent can prove that they are Cuban. The worst case scenario is that you may have to say "I know they are not Cuban, but I don't want any problems...Just take them." This may very well happen, as you are in no position to argue with them!

Good luck :)

Go to a local B&M, buy a 5er of any seconds, as they come without bands. Stick the receipt in the humi with your band-less cubans.

Done it many times, bringing as many as 3 boxes in.

Great idea... a few bucks is well worth it just in case.

Some great tips in here I will have to remember.

And definitely carry on. First time I checked them, I had my traveldor packed very carefully to fit all the smokes I was bringing... Reached my destination and it was clear that someone had rifled through them. Nothing taken, but poorly repacked. I wasn't happy.

Carry on... no problems.

Do not put cigars or any valuable or fragile items into checked baggage. Could get stolen, but even more likely damaged due to rough handling by the baggage guys. One time I flew into Santiago, Chile with a bottle of Graham's Porto in my checked bag. Bottle broke & all my clothes had red stains.:angryteet

Just like a lot of things... it just depends on the workers that you come across at that given time. Use caution and go into it realizing cuban cigars and lighters can be taken away from you. I wouldn't travel with something you can't do without.

Travel with a cheap Ronson Jet-lite, I have numerous times without any issues. Travel with some cuban cigars that are good, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if they got confiscated.
