I always travel with a 15 ct and I always check them in my bag but they wont bother you in your carry on. Just DONT take your lighter or cutter in your carry on because they will take them.
Soft flame lighters are allowed. As far as cutters, just bring a cheap one.

Heading to the SC beach herf. Is it better to put my sticks in the check in luggage or carry on as far as security is concerned?
I travel all over the country and always put them in my carry on. As you are aware, I carry a lot of sticks on planes between Phoenix and SoCal. :stretchgr

Coming from out of the country I do the same thing. If they check I am going to lose my CC's so I only carry a few.

What about leaving the states with cc's? Would they hassle you on exit?
Generally no, but there is nothing guaranteed. I was sweating bullets carrying some nice cigars (including a Dunhill Mojito) down to Nicaragua and I was just fine going through two US airports.

So should I just put my empty humidors in my luggage (well padded so they don't get damaged) and then put all my cigars in a tight ziploc bag and in my carry-on?

I imagine they'll be okay for 12 hours without humidifcation...

I fly every week with my cigars so here is what I suggest:

I would leave the lighter behind since those are prohibited unless they're emptied, put in an approved container and checked. I've brought my cutter everywhere - just not my expensive one because I'm still wary of some overzealous TSA person.

As far as your actual cigars, I wouldn't check them. Even if you pack them well, I've seen luggage take a 10-15 foot fall off the baggage belt, seen them fly off the carts in front of me while being driven around, etc. Plus, the cargo sometimes sits out in the ramp for certain periods of time, subject to the elements. And although I believe innate goodness of people, stuff has been known to disappear from checked luggage. Security won't hassle you for having cigars since enough people travel with them they know what it looks like.

Regards,
Randy

I suppose I should specify that I'm just taking a bus.

The luggage isn't thrown around at all. I put it on the bus myself, and collect it myself at the other end.

So I'm not really worried about the safety of my cigars/humidors during the travel time. I'll pack and pad them very well.

I'm more concerned about confiscation.

One of my coworkers bought a box of cubans at a duty free shop while traveling back to the US. They were confiscated by Customs in either Baltimore of JFK (I forget which). So, it definitely happens.

Bomb yourself!

If you already have a hotel, send your necessities ahead and they'll be waiting for you when you arrive.

and you resurrected a five and a half year old thread. :)

How many cigars are you taking along? How long? How durable do you want the case to be? What's your budget? How pretty do you want ?

Get yourself a Herf-a-dor (often available on cigarbid), or one of the travel humidors available at fieldsupply.com (they often run a "daily deal" on them) or else a Xikar travel humidor (the Crowned Heads one liked above is identical to a Xikar). They're very similar in design, work well to protect your cigars from damage, and are airtight to maintain your cigar rh. I have a number of them and love them. They'll even work for longer-term storage.

Here are a couple of mine:

I have the same type of Herf A Dors and they are great to travel with. As far as lighters and cutters go and some have already expressed their thoughts. I travel all over the world and what you need to consider is that not every TSA person follows the same script...most do but every once in awhile you deal with an idiot with a badge who thinks he's a PoliceMan. Use a plastic cheap cutter....don't bring an expensive soft flame like a Xikar Exodus or Dupont as some TSA people don't care what name brand lighter you have...if you just have to bring it with you then bring a copy of what the lighter is to show the agent...do his homework for him but I've seen Agents in Kansas City, Mo. argue with a passenger and took his lighter anyway...he even showed that it was a soft flame. I had a $75 cutter confiscated that had a small poker on it....maybe 1 inch long and they told me it could be "weaponized" and I laughed at them. I asked them about the metal eating utensils in the first class cabin where they had forks and knives and they just rolled their eyes and didn't say anything. I thanked them for "keeping us safe" while they were being hypocritical. I rarely fly anymore unless it's absolutely necessary...it's become ridiculous to get there 2 hours early...and plan the whole day for a 3 hour plane ride when I can drive it in the same amount of time and not go through the Nazi lineups.

I'm wondering about this too, but I am bringing a significantly larger amount, and I'm crossing the border from Canada to the USA.

I have my two humidors, one of them 75% full and the other empty (to be filled when I get there).

I guess with the Cubans I have, I should either not bring them, or take
Your only allowed 40 sticks
