Here's the article from our paper...

Public Hearing

Honestly... I hate cigarette smoke! I don't want it around me in a restaurant. But if I go to a bar... I am going to assume I'm gonna be around cigarettes, and I would love to have a cigar while I'm there. If I'm at Cracker Barrel, with my family, I don't plan on having a cigar there. Nor do I want to sit next to a "section" that isn't really separated well.

But... to ban smoking in bars, where there is not a large amount of food sales, or in a FREAKING cigar store... it's ridiculous. And I have spoken with representatives of this organization at a couple of local events, where they've had a booth, and they promote NO EXCEPTIONS. I think that's unrealistic for them. And now, they are grouping in all outdoor areas, as well.

However, it seems like it may be easy. I mean, the pizza joint/bar owner in the Joplin article has already given up. So, they may be able to just roll it. I just want to be able to have a choice of if I want to enjoy a cigar in certain areas around her.

Am I in the minority? ... that I think cigarette smoking in restaurants should be ban, but don't want it an "across the board" ban? I guess my question should be in the debate area.... Sorry. I mean, does it make me a hypocrite? I see it as two completely different things.

An addition...

I was just speaking with a coworker who is involved with that group. She swears up and down they support exemptions to businesses involved with smoking... ie: cigar stores, hookah lounge. Granted, our cigar stores don't really provide a place to sit and smoke, we DO have a hookah lounge in town. I have not had the opportunity to check it out, but it's been here for several years now. According to the lady I spoke to, from the group, it would be under the smoking ban, as well. That's ridiculous. Anyway... we'll see what comes from the hearing tonight.

We just fought the "One Air Alliance" here in Springfield. We were able to get retail tobacco shops exempted, but it wasn't without a fight. These people want NO exemptions regardless of who it hurts. They only relented when the the city council insisted on an exemption for retail tobacco shops. The ordinance is still in limbo.

But, the fight is not over here and it'll be back in front of the city council, or on a ballot, before long.

Well, the council voted down the ban. One council person added amendments to exclude outdoor patios & seating, narrow the distance from 20' from doors to 5', and exclude businesses that make most of their money from tobacco. 3/9 people voted against the amendments. Then, the amended ban failed. But they are going to take it up again next Monday. They could vote on it, again, or put it before the citizens to vote on.
