Great White Shark Killed CA Surfer

SURF BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 22) -- A 19-year-old surfer who died after getting bitten by a shark today off the Santa Barbara coast likely was attacked by the feared great white shark, an expert told AOL News.

Lucas Ransom, 19, a junior at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was attacked shortly before 9 a.m. PDT. Three beaches in Santa Barbara County were closed immediately after the attack. KEYT-TV reported that the shark bit off the surfer's leg and he bled to death.

The great white "is the likely culprit," said Steve Blair, assistant curator of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Calif., and a shark expert. "There is really nothing else I could think of in a normal course of events who would do this except a great white."

Blair said only a dozen out of the world's 400 shark species could inflict a bite like that and great whites are known to troll the coast of California and swim close to shore in search of seals and sea lions.

"The method is to do a surprise attack, usually from below with great force and inflict one devastating bite and let the victim weaken," Blair said. "They basically swim around a couple of minutes before finishing off the prey".

The victim was boogie boarding 100 yards off the beach with a friend when a shark suddenly pulled Ransom under the water, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department. The animal was between 14 and 20 feet in length, which is consistent with a great white, Blair said.

The friend apparently tried to get Ransom out of the water.

"I think he [Ransom] was dead before he made it to shore," Lt. Julie McCammon of the Sheriff's Department told AOL News.

The shark was likely swimming around as the pair fled from the water, Blair said.

Swimmers should stay out of the water in the area, but it's unlikely that the shark is out hunting humans, he added.

That's why I stay out of their territory. No thanks!
LOL - Does that mean you don't like the ocean?

The odds of getting bit are so small. There are a million people in the water of CA everyday. This happens maybe once every other year.

I do believe they are swimming around people all the time. We are just not on their normal menu.

Wow, crazy story! I still swim in the ocean, but yea sharks definitely scare me. I think I saw a small shark while snorkeling once, though it could have been a baracuda.

Thats a shame, yeah I stay away from the ocean. Sounds like some good odds, but odds are it'll be me that gets bitten!

It's on my bucket list. I have wanted to do it for years.
That sounds really cool, can't wait to hear about it next year! Just make sure this isn't the last thing on your bucket list, lol!

great whites are one of the calmest sharks out there. however, they have bad eyesight compared to other species such as the bull shark, who is more likely to attack you.

Yeah, i love sharks....

and i heard about this last night...prayed for the family. thats gotta be rough

I remember watching Shark week this year and seeing how many beaches around the world have lots of sharks swimming just off shore. They were visible from the air.

Made me appreciate swimming pools.

My prayers go out for the family though. I have a 19 year old son and this must be devistating to family.

Sad about that kid - I have a friend near there who told me that everyone knows that it's 'big-shark' area, but people still take their chances (the odds are slim)... Everyone (who surfs regularly) seems to have a story of seeing a large shadow under them, etc... I'm terrified of those things, yet I'm in awe of them too.

Kudos to you CC for booking that trip - it's on my bucket list too!

I just read the story in the paper. It's a cliche, but at least he went out doing something he loved. I'm in the water all the time and have seen a couple of gws fairly up close. One time one was 5 - 6 feet below me and to the left. When I saw it, it was looking straight up at me. It's something you never forget, but you can't let it scare you out of the water.

There are a lot of them in Malibu. That is were I surf too. They had some netted area set up off the shore at Paradise Cove for a long time. The lifegaurd said they were trying to catch a Great White but it did not work.
