So bummed to hear about this. 19 is really young. It won't keep me out of the water, but it'll make me nervous for a bit. No one has even been attacked at the beaches I frequent, but it's always in the back of your mind. I just try to convince myself they don't really exist, because I have never seen one. seems to work for me.

That is narly. You know one day a shark is going to bump that dude of his board. They mostly likely still wont attack but I would not want to free swim with a big shark like that just in case they got curious

Yeah tha tvideo made the rounds a few weeks back. I would have shat myself. Seems they film one or two there every year. And due to that statistic, I have no need to surf San Onofre.

I heard recently the channel between Catalina Island and the mainland has one of the densest populations of Mako sharks in the world.

Still have never seen one. Knock on wood.

I think certain places have a bad vibe. Since I'm on bodyboarding forums as well, I have heard a lot of guys don't like Surf Beach...just the vibe. Same goes for me with the southern half of San Onofre ( Power plant and Trails). Went there once...won't go back. North end of San Onofre...no problem.

Yeah, but I still have never heard of any shark attacks around San Onofre. Shark attacks are just so rare.

I will admit, if I am sitting in between sets on a slow day and I am far out there, all alone, your mind does start to wonder. LOL. If it is a busy day and the waves are big you don't worry about it at all. It it just the sitting alone for a long time that messes with your mind. But more people win the Lottery than are attacked by sharks, so that always brings me back to reality.

Hey..do you watch "Swamp People" on Hystory Channel? I love that show!! Alligator hunting in LA. Swamp.
I watched it once. We run up on them and spear them off the front of an airboat. Frog gigging is more fun. Here's a video (not mine).

Here's a 12 footer taken two years ago by my stepdad, and an 8 footer I got last year. :)

Again, I'd much rather be on top of that big gator than a small shark!

I've been kiteboarding a lot more than surfing lately. Typically, you're up and riding a lot more when you're kiteboarding. The exception is when you become separated from your board. At that point you have to body drag back to the board. I had to do it the other day, and as I'm doing it, I'm thinking. . .hmm, from below I must look just like a seal swimming along the surface. It was the best feeling getting back to the board.

I do alot of offshore fishing...it's scary passing black tips seven miles off shore (not far from a beach as you'd think) and looking back to see children swimming
