The price of age?

Is there a standard markup on cigars that are aged? I'm not talking 10 years or such, just things from 2005. Just say you can get a box of 2010 for $190, what would be an acceptable price you would pay for something from 05, or 04 (same vitolas) ? 10%, 20%, 30% markup, just asking?

I recently got a box of cigars from 1999. I could have bought the same thing new on a super sale for $190, but I paid $250. It was worth $2.25/stick to me to have them with that much age.

As to 5 years ... I don't know. I might pay a little mark up, but not a lot.

I was thinking about this too the other day. u see boxes listed at times on other sites where they have multiples and mark up 15-20 every year it goes back...but in reality why would it just be the number of the year vs quality. Like 03 vs. 01...if I had to choose...I would take 03 almost everytime....I hope this makes sense. in the end...I am also confrused

Be careful on 99s & 00s too. Substandard tobacco, construction problems & also why are they still available (maybe rejects) and how well have they been stored. I look for 2002 & early 2003. Just my opinion.

Speaking as a merchant, we have never charged a premium for aged Habanos. Aged does not mean rare. Rare garners additional value on the market.

The '98 Trinidad Fundadores are roughly the same price in Mexico, since they were first released.

This was from a private party, I've only had one--a tiny bit tight, but a great smoke (most cigars I've had from there are too tight for my liking, honestly).

I have had some issues with sicks from '00 and '01, though. Just 5ers and traded sticks, but a lot have been plugged.

.....and 2001. Many of these boxes especially the 99 and 00 were sold at half price by vendors a few years back. I'm not saying these cigars aren't good but I wouldn't pay a premium.

Good info. So, in general, good recent years were:

1998
2002
2003
2006-current

That about right? I know this doesn't mean all cigars from the other years are bad, just that these years are maybe a safer bet?

That's very subjective....Not accurate to say ALL brands from '04-'05 taste the same! (Maybe that's not what you meant to say exactly)

I have a box of ELDM from '05 that are smoking very well right now. A lot depends on the brand, the age of the tobacco, region, etc.

I find old Cubans (5yrs +) boring. That being said, I am new to Cubans and am navigating the waters trying to find what I like. I smoke random Cubans age wise and sometimes I'm blown away and sometimes I'm disappointed. Recently I was hooked up with a source for 2007 Bolivar CE and I couldn't be happier! There are so many variables in the original question, its hard to give a universal answer. Cuban Cigar production spiked greatly after 96/97 and thus many cigars in the 10 y/o range were available in greater quantities than cigars manufactured even 5 or 6 years later. If you get into pre 97, you can expect to pay a premium. If stored well, you're in for a real treat almost universally. There's also the fact that different regions around the world have to charge different prices for the exact same thing. The vendor from Edinburgh charges different than the vendor from Dusseldorff who charges different than the vendor from Geneva. All this is beside the fact that each vendor may be making the same profit on each box. As for your specific time period (<10 years), there's no reason whatsoever to charge a premium for the same thing just due to age. Some respectable vendors charge a premium based on QUALITY but not directly related to age.

Thanks guys for the replies, all the answers gave me further insight into my question. I stated smoking in 05, so the first couple of CC i bought were from that year. They have since been all smoke up, so I had the chance to buy some 05 Mag 46, which just happened to be one of the original boxes I bought back when I started. I paid $20 more a box, which I thought was ok. However, there were some other stuff like Monte #2 that were like $40 more a box. I have only smoked 1 M#2 and thought it was really good, so I was looking at getting them. These were all private party.

You bring up another good point.

Constant high demand will cause certain cigars to nearly always escalate in price. Examples of these are CoRo's, Mc2s, PSD4s, RASS, Epi2, Mag46, SW & Shorts. Some new cigars that might be added to this list after a bit are SigVI & Fundys

Also, take in to account that a private party may have paid more for a box 6 years ago than you'd pay for a new one now, given the weird things that have happened to that market. To them, they might be taking a loss, but to you it's a mark-up vs an '09 or '10 box.

The CoLa I have from 05 taste like CoLa. If all 05s taste like that then I suggest people buy anything they can get their hands on.
