As a person who doesn't own and has never owned a cell phone, I'd have to say no for myself. But I know quite a bit of people are all for that stuff, and could be useful for shop owners and people with larger stashes.

What class is this for? :)
Its for an entrepreneurial class, more or less a thesis capstone type of class. We have to develop our own idea for a product and produce a full business plan. And it wouldn't have to be a phone btw, could be email, or just an alarm. The options for this are kinda endless haha.

Post some more info. about your project.
Well, I kinda gotta be a bit hush hush for IP reasons. But I have a material, a polymer, that will swell in the presence of water or moisture and is semi sticky when wet. Attached to this will be metal plates and in between these will be a metal pin to make a contact switch. The idea is that if the moisture isn't just right, the contact pin will either separate or make contact with the plates and the circuit will either break or be completed and you can see where this goes lol.

You might be better off using a semiconductor...

2nd. What OP describes sounds like an analog hygro hooked up to a wire. There's no way to calibrate effectively, plus using a mechanical switch like that only notifies whether rh is greater than whatever maximum you set based on the wire position. Even if you have a second contact to act as the minimum you're still in unknown territory when it's in between.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Stick to something that's lab tested and proven. Anyone who is serious about humidity monitoring and willing dropping to drop cash on a hygro will only accept digital. http://www.sensirion.com/en/01_humidity_sensors/00_humidity_sensors.htm

So, I was thinking of attaching a digital meter to this thing, and then just having my gel be the moisture emitter. I feel like this would be a better use of my device. And the advantage is that when it gets low on water, it will make contact with a pin between to plates and set off an alarm telling you you need to resoak the gel. Does this sound like a better idea jacob? It would also have like RFID technology or something to transmit to a device what the moisture level is and such. Similar to how you've done it.

Hello all!

I do not mean to post to this forum with unwanted spam. I'm greatful to all that have helped me so far, but I need your help again. For those of you who have yet to find my thread I need your help too!

My name is Tim Hamerly and I am a senior working on a thesis project in which I have developed a moisture device that could be implemented into the humidors. Basically, it would release moisture into the humidor over a long long period of time and also tell you when it needed more water. I am currently in the process of doing market research, as you may have guessed.

I know devices like this already exist, but mine would both maintain a humidity level and it would tell you when it was about to run dry. I feel that this new idea is an improvement on my last one. Also, I would like to attach some form of a communications device that would notify the user via WiFi or RFID that the device was nearly out of water.

If you have just a few minutes to fill out this survey, it would be greatly appreciated. It has been modified slightly since the last time it was posted. If you took my earlier one, you do not need to retake this, but you still can as the new information would help a lot!

Again, I do not mean to post this as spam. I am truly trying to develop this product and could really use your help to determine if this product is worth while to the smoking community.

Any questions or concerns can be sent to my email address; thamerly@carthage.edu, and I will address them as soon as possible. Any advice can also be submitted to me through email or this forum thread and would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thank you for all your help!

That's almost been done! Someone built a device that sends the readings to Twitter every hour iirc
Yes, .jacob did it, and he is working with me as well. Twitter is a good idea but I'm thinking of posting it to a program or app on your phone or computer.

I would like to have one that notified me on a bracelet, like the Medic Alert.

"Your humidity's fallen, and it can't get up".
