I saw this phrase on the JR weekly special and think it is really dumb:

"we have gotten one of the Dominican Republic's largest manufacturers to come up with a line of Genuine Counterfeit Dominican cigars."

How can a counterfeit be geniune? Me thinks someone in the ad department is really going to far on this one. I don't want to buy them based on that statement alone, lol.

Anybody else have stoopid ads they see?

At one point in time, Ernesto Padilla was looked upon as a rising star in the cigar world. He was young and hungry, and he had a couple of lights-out, cutting edge cigars being manufactured by another rising star: Pepin Garcia. He also had a nice cigar being made in the Oliva factory. He received glowing ratings, lots of publicity, and all seemed to be going well for him. That was a couple years ago. Nowadays, the tide has taken an unfortunate turn for Padilla. Neither Pepin nor Oliva are making cigars for him anymore. We think this means one thing and one thing only: Padilla is on his way out... We have nothing against Padilla personally. In fact, we consider him to be a friend of ours. We simply do not want to get caught sitting on a ton of discontinued, sedentary, totally immobile inventory.

Therefore, we're cutting prices on all Padilla products bigtime! We're slashing prices on Padilla left and right, and blowing this stuff out from not 'till it's gone! Join in on the fun that is "Padilla Madness" and procure yourself some Padilla cigars today. Hey Ernie P., we've got one word for you and one word only: Buh-Bye.
....this was from a few years back in a Holts catalog. They apologized but still it was an F'd up thing to print.

A better question to ask is "WHY". Most of the Dominican stuff you can get cheep anyways and it's real. Would make more sence if it said "Cuban" not "Dominican".

JR has already been selling Perdomo manufactured "Genuine Counterfeit Cubans" and "Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cubans" for the last 10 years.

Kind of stupid... Why would you counterfeit a Dominican cigar?
That seems to be explained pretty well in the ad copy - it's being touted as a non-specific lower cost alternative to any number of higher priced DR cigars. There are a lot of smokers out there who buy what is cheap, because it's cheap. Some will take a gamble on these cigars and some of those smokers who do will like the cigars and continue to buy them.

I'm sure that all of our regular J·R customers know that our Genuine Counterfeit Cuban cigars are one of our best sellers. In fact, I can say with complete certainty that our Counterfeit Cubans outsell every other counterfeit cigar in America. So based on the secret desire of every American to buy counterfeit goods, be it cigars or the hundreds of brands of fake watches like Corum, Rollex, Movado, etc., we have gotten one of the Dominican Republic's largest manufacturers to come up with a line of Genuine Counterfeit Dominican cigars.

So, if you're spending an ocean of money buying any of the milder Connecticut wrapped premium brands from the Dominican Republic (like Macanudo, Montecristo, Arturo Fuente, Fonseca, etc.) then you really, really need to take a chance on these new counterfeits. Especially at this super low introductory price where you'll save an additional $1.00 PER CIGAR off our already low J·R Discount Price! In most cases you'll be getting cigars that compare favorably with 6, 7, even $10.00 or more cigars ... for LESS THAN 2 BUCKS each!

Like Tobii3 says, much better sales potential with the "Counterfeit Dominicans" name than "Flor de Baloney".

I smoked one of thier "Genuine Counterfeits" and thuoght it sucked. You get some companies trying any angle or hook and when they run out of really clever things to say they start making up stupid shit hoping someone will bite.

That is an incredibly stupid statement. Americans desire "fancy" products. They only buy counterfeits because they either can't afford the real thing or they get suckered into believing they ARE buying the real thing.
The majority of people don't go around saying "oooh, I gotta get my hands on some fake [insert product name]"
