JR Cigars Have You No Shame

[LTS 4 Bad Cigars]

Got home this evening and amidst the junk mail I receive this Thompson rag (I got on their list 10 years ago and cannot shake them) and out of the blue, I get this plastic-wrapped JR "Fourth Edition" catalog featuring a side-by-side comparison against ISOM and High-End sticks from the core manufacturers.

I am galled by this shameless marketing. Not to mention that about six (6) years ago, they forked over the names of all of their California customers to the Franchise Tax Board and we were asked to pay sales tax on the items we purchased. (For you folks outside of the state of CA you may not know that there is a check box on the FTB Form that asks that you list cigar purchases. Like you would want to pay twice...)

Anyway, just wanted to vent and to inquire of this great board if there was anyone else who received this crap.

I got one also, and I don't recall ever ordering from them. I got a good laugh at the comparisons before I tossed it.

Count me in too, I get JR's and Thompson's catalogs on a regular basis....they are both great for lining the bottom of the bird cage!

I pondered ordering a bundle of padron knockoffs but then decided if I wanted that I could just pick up a five pack of Nica Libres.

Sadly I no longer order from them. Not the largest selection of pipe tobacco "I" smoke and I no longer smoke the larger brands with few exceptions like La Traviata Maduro and Warlock. Neither do they carry.

Or for just as cheap, you could get a bunch of Padrons from the x000 series, and get a cigar that is actually pretty darn good!

I seem to get bi monthly thompson catalogs, the JR stuff is a little less frequent. I dont order from either of them anymore. It seems that JR could lower their prices quite a bit if they stopped sending out a magazine quality catalog all the time.

I was some how able to shake the CI catalogs. I never ordered from JR and luckily. I might have got their catalogs at one point even never ordering but they didn't follow me when I moved two years ago.

I've ordered from JR and do watch their weekly specials but I've learned enough to know that most of the time it's just dumping stuff nobody really wants. I did not however, like getting the 2 huge catalogs in the mail. The comparison piece was just way overkill. I also can't seem to find a "take me off your mailing list" in my customer settings. Which sucks.

Haven't seen the JR catalog. However, it sounds like something I saw on Famous website recently. It suggested Olor and Perdomo Cuban Parejo as alternatives to AF Hemi and Don Carlos. Somewhat humerous also.

Once you order from JR, I think you receive their catalogs forever. I used to buy pipe tobacco from JR. I never found their cigar selection to include anything I wanted. I drop the catalog off in the recycling bin on the way from the mailbox to the kitchen.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about. I love getting catalogs, especially JR's: Nice pictures and sometimes some funny stuff from Lew Rothman. I buy regularly from JR's, CI, Holt's and some other etailers, and they are all excellent with great customer service, IME. The sole exception is Thomson's, which sucks on every count. I don't often buy based on what I see in the catalogs, but they are fun to look at. Kind of like the man cave version of window shopping...

Pretty much the same here - they are something to aimlessly thumb through while smoking a cigar and every now and then I even find something in them that piques my interest. I too find Lew to be quite entertaining at times - some of his catalogs have been worth reading cover to cover just for his comments.

As for the CC vs NC comparison, well, um, holy chit... I just opened a coors light and it started snowing outside now...

I agree, JR's catalogs are like magazines. The photos are very high quality, making these a great on-the-john read.

That's the thing, my normal go to smoke is either the 4000 or the 7000 as they're both perfectly fitting into my allotted smoking time

JR used to sell Fuente and Newman premium smokes but this year seem to be always backordered......no reason now to buy from them anymore.:hammersma

I really do want the ccom catalog, but somehow they never make it to me
